About Masuria
I should have known the sat nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send us through what looked like a farmer's private drive. There we were, three hours out of Warsaw, two children in the back asking if we were there yet for the forty-seventh time, and me insisting we trust technology. My partner, ever the sensible one, suggested we stop for directions at a petrol station in Olsztyn. I waved her off. Pride, as they say, cometh before a very muddy fall.

Twenty minutes later we were doing a three-point turn in a field of very unimpressed-looking cows. The kind of cows that judge you. You know the ones. I had to get out to guide the car backwards, slipped on something I shall politely call "damp earth," and spent the rest of the journey with one brown trouser leg and what felt like a permanent blush. The children found this hilarious. My partner found it predictable. I found a new appreciation for paper maps.

But then we found Biskupiec, and somehow the sat nav redeemed itself. The cottage sat down a proper lane, not a cow-adjacent track, with trees on either side that filtered the afternoon light into something almost cinematic. The Masurian Lake District has that effect, I have since learned. It makes ordinary moments feel slightly magical, like someone has adjusted the saturation on reality.

The cottage itself was one of those solid, sensible Polish builds that immediately puts you at ease. White walls, dark wooden beams, a terrace that practically begged for a morning coffee. My partner was out of the car before I had even undone my seatbelt, already planning where she would sit with her book. The children had spotted the garden and were doing that peculiar sprint-walk children do when they want to run but also want to look like they are not running.

I was still extracting our cases from the boot, one eye on my muddy trouser leg, when our neighbour appeared. An elderly gentleman with a pipe and a wave that suggested he had seen many British families arrive in various states of disarray. He spoke no English, I spoke no Polish, but we managed a perfectly satisfactory conversation about the weather through the universal language of pointing at clouds and shrugging.

Inside, the cottage had that particular stillness of a place that has been waiting for you. The kitchen smelled faintly of pine from the cupboards. The living room had a fireplace that the children immediately claimed for marshmallow-toasting purposes. Upstairs, the bedrooms were simple, clean, unpretentious. The kind of rooms where you sleep better than you do at home, something I have never fully understood but gratefully accept.

I stood in the doorway of our bedroom, still holding my case, and felt something shift. The journey stress, the cow incident, the general accumulated tension of family travel, it all seemed to settle. Through the window I could see the edge of a lake, just visible between the trees, and I understood why people come to Masuria. Not for grand gestures or packed itineraries, but for this. For space. For the particular quiet of water and woods. For a cottage that asks nothing of you except that you slow down.

My partner found me there, still standing, still looking. She did not say anything. She just put her hand on my shoulder and went downstairs to make tea. I followed eventually, muddy trousers and all, already thinking about where we might walk tomorrow, what fish the local lake might offer, how many days we could stretch this feeling across.

The children were on the terrace, arguing about who had seen the biggest dragonfly. The neighbour was watering his tomatoes. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked once and thought better of it. I sat down with my tea and my temporarily intact dignity, and decided that getting slightly lost had been entirely worth it.
