About Lublin
The mishap, though. I should start there, because it rather set the tone. Somewhere on the A4, convinced I was being terribly organised, I had packed the cottage key code in what I called my "important documents" folder. Very smug. Very adult. What I had actually done was photograph the booking confirmation, crop it badly, and save it to a phone folder I now cannot locate. I spent forty minutes at a petrol station outside Chelm, balanced on a bollard, scrolling through 3,000 holiday snaps from 2019 onwards, growing increasingly frantic. A lovely Polish gentleman in a Fiat offered to help. Through gestures and my terrible Polish, he understood my predicament, shrugged in that universal way that says "technology, eh?", and bought me a coffee. I found the code eventually, in a screenshot of a screenshot, nestled between a photo of my neighbour's cat and a parking ticket from Torquay. By the time I reached the cottage, I was vibrating with that particular exhaustion that is part travel fatigue, part self-inflicted idiocy. But then I turned off the engine. Proper silence. Not the strained hush of a city at night, but the deep, breathing quiet of pine forest and distant water. I sat there for a full minute, windows down, smelling resin and woodsmoke from somewhere nearby. The tension in my shoulders actually melted. I could feel it going, like ice in a warm drink. The cottage itself sat among trees, wooden and straightforward, with a deck that looked recently swept and a light left on inside. Someone had thought of that. Someone had flicked a switch for a stranger. I found this disproportionately touching, standing there with my ridiculous wheelie case and my phone still showing that cat photo. Inside, it smelled of clean linen and something else, something I eventually identified as the particular scent of a place that is heated by wood and lived in properly. Not hotel-sterile, not musty either. Just settled. The kitchen had actual coffee, not those sachets that taste of disappointment. The living room had books in three languages, including one in Polish about mushroom foraging that I absolutely intend to pretend I can read. I opened the doors to the deck and stood there in my socks, watching the last light filter through the pines, listening to what I eventually realised was a woodpecker. A woodpecker! I live near a railway line in Croydon. This was practically a nature documentary. I had planned to unpack properly, to establish order, to be the sort of person who hangs things in wardrobes on arrival. Instead I sat on that deck with a beer from the fridge, still in my driving trousers, and watched the trees go dark against a sky that seemed unfairly full of stars. The mishap with the key code, the sat nav confusion, the petrol station bollard - all of it felt already like someone else's story, or a funny anecdote I might tell later by a fire. Not now. Now was for sitting very still and feeling slightly foolish about how much I needed this, how loudly my ordinary life had been shouting without my noticing. Tomorrow I would explore properly, find the lake, work out where to buy bread. Tonight, I simply sat there until the mosquitoes found me, then retreated inside with my beer and my ridiculous grin, already half in love with a place I had seen for twenty minutes. |
