About Kashubia
I had been driving for the better part of six hours when I realised my sat nav had developed what I can only describe as a personality disorder. Somewhere near the German border it decided I absolutely must see a field of very enthusiastic rapeseed, and before I knew it I was on a road barely wide enough for a determined bicycle. My wheelie case in the back seat had tipped over and was making that sad rattling noise that luggage makes when it has given up on you.

The mishap, though, came ten minutes from my destination. I stopped at what I generously called a petrol station to ask for directions in my finest GCSE Polish, which consists mainly of pointing and hopeful smiling. I managed to buy three bottles of water I did not need, a chocolate bar that turned out to be marzipan (my only food nemesis), and directions that involved a great deal of arm-waving towards trees. Back in the car, triumphant, I promptly reversed into a bollard that I swear materialised from nowhere. The bollard was fine. My dignity was not.

But then I found it. The Tuchola, tucked down a lane that felt less like a road and more like a promise. The first thing that struck me was the silence. Not the uncomfortable, waiting sort, but the kind that makes you exhale without meaning to. The property sat there looking terribly pleased with itself, all timber and sensible Scandinavian lines, surrounded by pine forest that smelled of resin and something else I could not name but wanted to bottle.

I wrestled my luggage out, now properly rebellious after the bollard incident, and stood for a moment just listening. A woodpecker was doing something industrious nearby. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked once and seemed to think better of it. The air had that particular quality you only get in proper countryside, where your lungs feel slightly confused by all the oxygen.

The key was in the lockbox as promised, which felt almost suspiciously efficient after my journey. I fumbled it open with the code written on my phone, which had gone into battery-saving mode and was now displaying everything in a sort of aggressive orange. Inside, the place smelled of wood and faintly of something citrus, possibly a cleaning product being overly optimistic about the Polish forest aesthetic.

I will admit to a small, embarrassing moment then. I sat on the edge of the sofa, still in my driving shoes, and felt something dangerously close to relief. Not the dramatic sort, but the quiet kind that sneaks up when you have been holding yourself slightly tense for six hours and suddenly do not need to anymore. The kind that makes you notice you are tired in a way that feels earned rather than defeated.

The windows were the thing, though. Floor-to-ceiling, facing the trees, and I understood immediately why someone had designed it this way. The light was doing that late-afternoon thing where everything looks slightly golden and forgiving, even my battered car with its new bollard-related scuff. I watched a squirrel have what appeared to be an existential crisis on a branch for several minutes, and I did not check my phone once.

I had brought books I intended to read, plans for walks I had researched, ambitions to be productive in that way people promise themselves they will be on holiday. Standing there in my socks on the wooden floor, watching the forest settle into evening, I suspected I might do none of it. And I suspected, with the quiet certainty of someone who has just reversed into a bollard and somehow ended up exactly where they needed to be, that this was rather the point.
