About Kashubia
I have never been more grateful for a sat nav than I was driving up to our cottage in Kashubia, though I will admit it very nearly led me into a duck pond. There I was, squinting at a gravel track that looked more like a suggestion than a road, convinced the robotic voice had finally lost the plot. My partner was navigating with the confidence of someone who had not looked at the map once, and the kids were in the back asking if we were nearly there for the forty-seventh time. Then the track opened up, and there it was: our Tuchola, looking like something from a Polish storybook, all timber and quiet charm, with trees that seemed to lean in for a better look at the newcomers.

The mishap, because there is always one with us, happened approximately thirty seconds after I turned off the engine. I had decided, in my infinite wisdom, to be the hero who unpacked the car while everyone else stretched their legs. I grabbed what I thought was the cool bag, marched toward the front door with the purposeful stride of a man who definitely knew where he was going, and promptly stepped into a flowerbed that turned out to be considerably softer than it appeared. The cool bag survived. My dignity did not. My youngest found this hilarious and immediately needed the toilet, which is how I came to be standing in wet socks, negotiating with a key safe, while my family abandoned me for the indoors.

But here is the thing about first impressions: they stick, and this place stuck in the best possible way. The Tuchola has that rare quality of feeling lived-in without feeling worn-out. The living room smelled of pine and something else I could not place, probably just the honest scent of a wooden house that has seen proper seasons. Beamed ceilings, a fireplace that instantly became the focal point of all our plans, and windows that framed the greenery like paintings someone had thoughtfully hung just for us. My daughter declared the upstairs bedroom "cozy" which at her age means acceptable, and my son discovered the garden went on far enough that he could not see where it ended. This pleased him enormously.

I stood in the kitchen, still in my damp socks because I am stubborn like that, and made tea with the kind of kettle that actually boils properly. Through the window I watched a squirrel have what I can only describe as an existential crisis on the bird table. My partner appeared with a packet of biscuits she had hidden from the children and we just stood there, not saying much, letting the quiet do its work. That is the magic of these cottage holidays, I think. Nobody is performing for anyone. There is no buffet breakfast to rush for, no entertainment schedule to consult. Just space, and wood, and the faintly ridiculous memory of your father disappearing into a herbaceous border.

The evening brought the kind of darkness you forget exists when you live in a town. We walked the immediate lanes, nothing ambitious, just circling the property to stretch car-cramped legs. The kids ran ahead with torches, making ghosts of themselves in the beam. Somewhere an owl did that thing owls do, and we all stopped to listen like it was a private concert. Back inside, I made a fire with the enthusiasm of a man who has watched approximately two YouTube tutorials on the subject. It caught, eventually, and we sat around it with supermarket pierogi and a sense of accomplishment that far exceeded the actual effort involved.

That first night I slept better than I had in months. Something about the weight of a proper duvet, the absolute silence, the knowledge that tomorrow held nothing more demanding than a potter about and perhaps a successful barbecue. We had arrived chaotic and slightly damp, and the Tuchola had simply absorbed it all, offering back stillness and the faint smell of pine. I think that is what I will remember most: not the duck pond near-miss, not even my unexpected horticultural adventure, but the feeling of a place that asks nothing of you except that you slow down enough to notice it.
