About Kashubia
I have never been so grateful to see a set of patio doors in my entire life. After six hours of driving from Gdansk airport, a wrong turn that took us through what I am fairly certain was someone's actual farmyard, and a spirited argument with a sat nav that insisted "Gdinia" was definitely a place, we finally pulled up to our holiday home in Kashubia. I was ready to kiss the gravel driveway.

The mishap, because there is always one with us, came during the final hour. Convinced I knew a shortcut, I directed my partner down a road that grew progressively narrower until we were essentially driving through a tunnel of pine trees, branches screeching against both sides of the hire car like fingernails on a blackboard. "Scenic route," I kept saying, gripping the steering wheel with the desperation of a man who knows he has made a terrible mistake but must commit to the bit. When we emerged into a clearing to find three elderly men playing cards outside a shed, their expressions suggested foreign cars full of panicked tourists were not entirely unknown to them. They pointed us back toward civilization without a word, though one did smile in a way that will haunt me for years.

But then, those patio doors. They slid open with satisfying smoothness, and suddenly there was the terrace, the garden, and beyond it nothing but proper Polish countryside rolling away in shades of green I had forgotten existed. I stood there in my crumpled travel clothes, still clutching the car keys, and felt something in my chest actually loosen. My partner walked straight past me, found the sun lounger, and became horizontal without apparent transition between states. She did not speak for twenty minutes. I took this as an excellent sign.

The house itself had that particular charm of somewhere built for actual living rather than performance. A proper kitchen where you could imagine someone making pierogi on a rainy Tuesday. Bedrooms with windows that actually opened wide enough to let in the smell of the garden, which was mostly grass and something flowering that I could not identify and had no intention of learning. I am on holiday; botanical ignorance is permitted, even encouraged.

We did nothing of consequence that first afternoon. This was the entire point, though it took me longer than it should have to accept it. I kept suggesting we might unpack properly, perhaps find the nearest shop, maybe look up what Kashubia is actually famous for beyond the general concept of "north Poland, quite rural." My partner, now horizontal with a book she had started at the airport and would not finish for another fortnight, made a noise that translated roughly to "absolutely not." I made coffee with the strange Polish machine, carried it outside, and discovered that doing very little in strong sunshine is actually a skill that requires practice. I was out of practice. By late afternoon I had progressed from anxious fidgeting to genuine stillness. The coffee went cold. I did not care.

The garden became our world. Mornings blurred into afternoons with no structure beyond hunger and the angle of the sun. I read half a novel I had been carrying around since March, abandoning it whenever a bird did something interesting on the lawn. There were many birds. They seemed to be performing specifically for us, though this was likely egotistical thinking encouraged by too much sunshine and insufficient activity.

Gentle exploration meant walking to the village shop for bread and whatever looked promising in the chilled section, returning with mysterious sausages and a sense of achievement wholly disproportionate to the effort involved. We found a lake one afternoon, though "found" suggests more intention than we actually possessed; we simply walked until water appeared, then stood beside it for a while. Someone was fishing in the middle distance. We did not speak to them. They did not speak to us. Perfect.

I had worried, before arrival, about filling the days. This worry now seems like something that happened to a different person, someone who thought relaxation required management. Kashubia in the sunshine teaches otherwise. The house gave us shelter and coffee and those miraculous patio doors. The countryside gave us permission to slow down until we matched its pace. I stopped checking my phone for anything beyond the time, and eventually stopped checking that. My partner finished her book, started another, fell asleep during both. I have photographs of her doing absolutely nothing in three different garden locations, each indistinguishable from the last, each precious to me in ways I cannot properly explain.

On our final morning I stood at those patio doors with my last cup of Polish coffee, watching mist lift from the fields, and understood something about holidays I had known once and forgotten. The doing nothing was not emptiness. It was the whole point, the thing we had travelled six hours and one disastrous shortcut to find. I slid the door open, stepped outside, and did absolutely nothing with complete intention.
