About Baltic Sea
The drive from Gdansk to the Baltic coast takes you through flat, green countryside dotted with red-roofed farmhouses and sudden stands of pine forest. By the time we turned onto the smaller roads leading to our holiday home, the afternoon light was doing that golden, slanting thing that makes everything look like a postcard. Even my travel-stained family of four seemed to soften at the edges. Podamirowo itself is one of those tiny Polish villages that doesn't so much announce itself as quietly materialise. A handful of houses, some tidy gardens, and then our place at the end of a sandy track. The first thing that struck me was the smell - that particular Baltic combination of pine resin and distant sea air that immediately lowers your shoulders by about three inches. The second thing was the absolute silence, broken only by what I later learned was a very committed woodpecker. The cottage sits in a generous garden with old apple trees and a slightly wonky wooden swing that my daughter claimed within seconds. It's painted that warm, buttery yellow that seems to glow in the late sun, with a proper covered terrace where someone had left a rustic wooden table and benches. I pictured myself there with a beer, feeling smug about my excellent life choices. The reality, of course, involved me immediately tripping over the step while carrying a suitcase and nearly redecorating the terrace with my face. Inside, the place has that satisfying solidity of proper Polish country construction - thick walls, wooden beams, furniture that has clearly seen several generations of family holidays. The kitchen is compact but genuinely equipped, not one of those holiday-rental kitchens where you need to MacGyver a meal together with a blunt knife and hope. My son disappeared upstairs to investigate the loft bedroom and declared it "acceptable," which from a thirteen-year-old counts as wild enthusiasm. What I hadn't fully appreciated from the photos was how the garden simply continues into pine woodland, with a narrow path that apparently leads through to the coast. We resisted the temptation to explore immediately, mainly because we'd been travelling since dawn and smelled accordingly. Instead, we opened every window to let that pine-and-sea breeze circulate, and I made the ceremonial first cup of tea while standing on the terrace, watching the light change through the trees. The nearest shop is a few minutes' drive in the village beyond, a small grocery where we later bought provisions for a scratch dinner. That first evening, though, we made do with bread and cheese from a roadside stall, eaten at that wobbly wooden table as the sky turned properly dark and the woodpecker finally called it a night. I sat there long after the children had gone to bed, nursing a lukewarm beer and listening to the wind move through the pines. The key incident already felt like it belonged to someone else's holiday, or at least to a version of myself I was happy to leave at that petrol station. There's something about these simple, slightly ramshackle places that strips away the performance of everyday life. You can't be impressive here. You can only be present. The sea, I reminded myself, was still waiting. But that could wait for morning. |
