About Vestfold
I have never been so grateful for heated seats in my life. That is the first thing I need to say about driving down to Tjome in Vestfold last November. The second thing is that I definitely, categorically, without question, packed the wrong coat. You know the one. The "smart" coat. The one that looks lovely in a London pub but turns into a soggy sponge the moment a Norwegian sea breeze so much as glances in your direction.

The journey from Oslo had been straightforward enough. Smooth roads, forests turning every shade of russet and gold, the occasional glimpse of fjord water so dark and still it looked like spilled ink. I was feeling rather pleased with myself, humming along to something embarrassing, when I realised I had absolutely no idea which turning led to the actual property. My phone decided this was the perfect moment to lose signal. Of course it did. I ended up doing three laps of what I now know is a very small island, waving apologetically at the same elderly man walking his dog each time. By the third pass he looked genuinely concerned. I nearly offered him a lift just to explain myself.

When I finally found the place, tucked along a quiet lane with birch trees shedding their last leaves across the gravel, I sat in the car for a full minute just breathing. Part relief. Part something else I could not quite name yet. The house sat low and unassuming, painted that deep red you see everywhere in Norway, white trim around the windows glowing against the grey afternoon. Smoke curled from the chimney. Actual smoke. Someone had lit the wood burner already, or perhaps it had been ticking over all day, waiting.

November in Vestfold does not arrive with drama. It seeps in. The light was already fading at half past three, that particular Nordic dimness that makes every lit window feel like an invitation to something warm and private. I grabbed my bags, including the traitorous coat, and crunched across to the door. The air smelled of salt and woodsmoke and something else, something green and growing underneath the decay of autumn. Damp earth. Decomposing leaves. The sea not far away, though you could not see it yet.

Inside, the warmth hit me like a physical thing. Whoever had designed this place understood winter. Thick wool blankets draped over sofas. Candles everywhere, actual candles, not those LED pretenders. The kitchen window looked out onto a deck that would be glorious in July and was currently being slowly buried under wet leaves. I found myself smiling at it anyway. There is something honest about a holiday home that does not pretend to be something it is not. This was not trying to be a summer brochure. It was resolutely, comfortably, November.

I made tea with hands that were still slightly numb, standing at that window, watching the last proper light leak out of the sky. Somewhere a boat horn sounded, distant across the water. The season had already decided what kind of trip this would be. No swimming. No lazy evenings on that deck. Instead, early nights and thick socks and the particular pleasure of being warm while the world outside did its cold, dark thing.

I thought about that wrong coat hanging in the hallway, dripping slightly. It would do. For now, the heated seats and the wood burner and the absolute certainty that I would not be going anywhere useful tonight. November had arrived. I was surprisingly happy to let it.
