About South Trondelag
I found the cabin eventually, tucked into a hillside with the Trollheimen mountains looming behind it like a very patient, very green audience. The key was exactly where the instructions said it would be, which felt almost suspicious given my track record with holiday rentals. I spent a solid minute just standing on the wooden deck, breathing in air that tasted of pine and absolutely nothing else, listening to a silence so complete it felt almost rude. The first morning, I woke to sunshine pouring through the windows with an enthusiasm I found slightly aggressive at seven o'clock. By ten, I had established what would become my routine: coffee on the deck, a book that I would read approximately four pages of before dozing off, and the occasional glance at the mountains to confirm they were still there. They always were. Mountains, I have learned, are terribly reliable in this respect. I had brought ambitious plans. Hiking routes printed out, recommendations for local attractions, a genuine intention to be active and improving. They remained in my bag, slowly creasing, while I perfected the art of horizontal living. The cabin had a hammock. I am not a person who has ever successfully entered a hammock with dignity, yet I found myself returning to it with the devotion of a convert, occasionally reading the same paragraph six times because the sunshine had made my eyelids unexpectedly heavy. The village of Oppdal itself received my gentle attention in the afternoons. I would drive down with vague intentions of cultural enrichment, purchase some excellent cheese from the local shop, and find myself drawn to a bench with a view. There is a particular bench near the church, positioned with the strategic precision of someone who understood that visitors would need to sit down and reconsider their productivity. I became intimately familiar with its wooden slats. On my third day, I attempted what I termed an "exploratory stroll" along a nearby trail. I walked for twenty minutes, found an exceptionally comfortable rock, and remained there for two hours. A sheep observed this with what I chose to interpret as respect rather than judgment. I returned to the cabin with a renewed appreciation for my own capacity for stillness, which I had previously assumed was quite limited. The evenings brought their own rhythm. The cabin's small kitchen encouraged simple meals, eaten on the deck as the light stretched across the valley in that particular Norwegian way that makes sunset feel like an event rather than an ending. I spoke to almost no one for days, yet felt less lonely than I do in crowded places. There is something about genuine quiet that fills a space differently than noise does. I had worried, before arriving, that a week of doing very little would leave me restless, itching for purpose. Instead, I found something closer to peace, though I hesitate to call it that because it sounds rather grand and what I actually found was much simpler. I found that I could sit in sunshine and not need to be anywhere else, not even in my own plans for tomorrow. On my final morning, I packed with the slow reluctance of someone leaving a conversation mid-sentence. The mountains were still there, of course. I suspect they will be when I return, patient and green and asking nothing of anyone who comes to sit in their sunshine. |
