About South Trondelag
The mishap, you ask? Oh, that happened about two minutes after arrival. I had spotted the key safe, felt terribly smug about remembering the code, and promptly dropped the entire thing down a drain. Not the key, thankfully. Just the metal box. There it sat, glinting up at me from amongst the pine needles and what I hoped was moss, while my partner stood by the car in a silence that spoke volumes. I fished it out with a tent peg from the boot, which felt like a triumph of human ingenuity until I realised my shoes were now full of Norwegian rainwater. But then we opened the door. I am not a person who gasps at interiors. I am British. We nod appreciatively and perhaps remark that something is "very nice." Yet there I was, actually catching my breath. The Melhus cabin opened into a living space that smelled of pine and something else, something clean and cold that I can only describe as "properly Nordic." Floor-to-ceiling windows framed a view I had assumed was Photoshopped on the listing. A lake, actual mountains, and trees that looked like they had been planted by someone with an exceptional eye for composition. The kitchen, which I had worried might be one of those holiday lets where "fully equipped" means a blunt knife and a tin opener from 1973, turned out to be genuinely better than my own at home. I opened a cupboard and found not one but three types of coffee maker, which struck me as either excessive or absolutely essential depending on how seriously one takes one's mornings. I take mine very seriously indeed. We dumped our bags in the bedroom, where the duvets were so thick and white they looked like they belonged in a fancy hotel rather than a wooden cabin in South Trondelag. I flopped onto one and immediately felt that particular exhaustion that only comes from travel, that bone-deep tiredness where even your hair feels weary. My partner suggested a walk down to the water's edge. I suggested they were mad. They went anyway, returning twenty minutes later with wet trainers and a grin, reporting that they had seen a heron and possibly a fish that was "definitely quite large." I stayed on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket that had been left folded with almost military precision, and watched the sky do its slow fade from pale blue to a sort of lavender-grey. Somewhere outside, something splashed in the lake. The central heating clicked on with a satisfying thunk. My ruined shoes sat by the door like a small memorial to my own incompetence. I thought about how I had worried this place would feel isolated, too quiet, too far from anywhere. Instead, sitting in that warm room with the vast Norwegian landscape pressing against the glass, I felt something I had not expected: relief. Pure, uncomplicated relief. The drain incident already felt like a story I would tell rather than a disaster. The journey, with its broken wheel and its strange bus, felt worth it. The fish may or may not have been large. The heron was definitely real. And I was definitely, completely, finally on holiday. |
