The SatNav said we'd arrived at a field with one very unimpressed sheep, which should have been my first clue that our "Liarvag/Nedstrand" cottage holiday in Rogaland was going to be an adventure. Three hours earlier, my family and I had collected our hire car at Stavanger airport full of Norwegian optimism and slightly too many bags of crisps. I'd insisted on driving because, as I told my wife, "I've watched enough Scandi noir to understand Norwegian road etiquette." This was, in retrospect, a spectacular overstatement.

The mishap came just outside Tysvaer, where I took what I confidently declared was "definitely a shortcut" down a gravel track that grew progressively more agricultural. By the time I admitted defeat, we'd done a twelve-point turn between two birch trees while a local in a tractor watched with the patient amusement of someone who'd seen this exact scene approximately four thousand times before. My daughter asked if we were going to live in the woods now. I laughed a laugh that didn't reach my eyes.

But here's the thing about Rogaland. You can be absolutely lost, slightly mortified, and still surrounded by such ridiculous beauty that you forget to care. The fjord landscapes here don't politely request your attention; they simply assume it. We finally found the cottage tucked along the Nedstrand shoreline, and I stepped out of the car with that particular mixture of relief and sheepishness that seems to define my holiday arrivals.

The cottage itself had that immediately welcoming quality of somewhere that's been properly lived in rather than aggressively styled. Wooden walls that had absorbed decades of coastal weather, a kitchen that smelled faintly of coffee and previous occupants' fry-ups, and windows that framed the Liarvag waters like a painting that someone had thoughtfully hung just for us. My wife raised one eyebrow at me - the universal signal for "you're forgiven, but only just" - and I knew we'd landed somewhere good.

Within an hour, the children had established themselves as self-appointed wildlife spotters, reporting with great solemnity every seagull, every distant boat, every "definitely a seal" that was almost certainly a rock. I made tea in a slightly unfamiliar kettle and stood at the window watching the light change across the water, feeling that particular shift that happens when you finally let the journey go and arrive somewhere properly.

The first evening, we walked the immediate shoreline path, no destination in mind, just the simple pleasure of stretching legs that had been folded into a car for too long. The air carried that clean, slightly briny quality you only get on Norwegian coastlines, and somewhere a cockerel was making announcements with more enthusiasm than timing. My son fell into step beside me, unusually quiet, and said, "It's nice here, Dad," which from a twelve-year-old constitutes practically a sonnet.

I found myself reflecting, as I tend to do in these moments, on how much energy I'd spent worrying about the journey, the directions, whether I'd packed enough socks, when the actual magic was always going to be this: standing somewhere unfamiliar with people I love, watching the day settle into evening across a fjord I couldn't have found on a map three days ago. The cottage didn't need to be fancy. The location didn't need to be famous. It just needed to be here, and us to be in it, finally still enough to notice.

That night, I slept better than I had in months, lulled by water sounds and the comfortable knowledge that absolutely nowhere needed driving to tomorrow.
