I have never been very good at reading maps, and this became embarrassingly clear somewhere around hour four of our drive from Stavanger. My partner, bless her patience, had handed me the task of navigating the final stretch to our holiday let in Fister. "Just follow the fjord road," she'd said, as if that were simple. I promptly directed us down a farm track that ended in a sheep pen, where an elderly ewe gave me a look of such profound disappointment that I felt it in my chest.

We eventually found the turning, marked by a weathered post easy to miss if you are, say, arguing about whose fault the sheep were. The road narrowed to a single track, winding through rocky outcrops and sudden glimpses of Lysefjord's dark water below. Each bend revealed another view that made me forget my navigational shame - sheer cliffs rising straight from the water, patches of wildflowers clinging to crevices, the odd red fishing hut perched impossibly on stilts.

The property sat at the end of a gravel drive, tucked between a low stone wall and a stand of wind-bent birch trees. I had worried it might feel too isolated, too exposed to the Norwegian elements. Instead, it felt immediately like somewhere that had been waiting sensibly for visitors to arrive and stop being foolish. The exterior was traditional weatherboard, painted that deep burgundy so common in Rogaland, with white trim around the windows that caught the late evening light.

My partner was already at the door, fumbling with the key box, when I noticed the terrace. It jutted out toward the fjord with nothing between it and the water but air and a few determined gulls. I stood there with our bags at my feet, suddenly aware of how quiet it was. Not the uncomfortable silence of forgotten places, but the restful hush of somewhere that never needed to shout.

Inside smelled of pine and something faintly maritime, that clean salt-tinged scent that follows you everywhere along this coast. The living area opened directly onto that view through generous windows, and I understood immediately why the owners had arranged the seating to face outward. You would have to be spectacularly contrary to ignore that panorama. The kitchen was compact but properly equipped, not one of those holiday lets where you open a drawer to find a single bent fork and a can opener from 1973.

I made us both tea using the hob, because I am British and this is how I process new experiences. We sat on the terrace as the light shifted toward that prolonged Nordic dusk that never quite commits to darkness. A small boat puttered across the fjord, its engine sound carrying clearly across the water before fading. My partner pointed out a hawk circling the cliff face opposite, and I nodded as if I had spotted it first.

What struck me most, I think, was how quickly the sheep incident stopped mattering. Travel does this, if you let it. You arrive flustered and slightly ridiculous, convinced your minor disasters define the trip. Then you sit with decent tea in a decent mug, watching the fjord breathe beneath a sky that refuses to dim, and you realise the mishaps are just the price of admission. I had got us lost among livestock, yes. But I had also got us here, to this particular bench, at this particular hour, with nothing more pressing than deciding whether to cook the salmon tomorrow or the day after.

The gulls had fallen silent. Somewhere distant, a dog barked once and thought better of it. I finished my tea and made the kind of contented noise my partner has learned to tolerate, and we sat there until the mosquitoes finally drove us inside, which in Norway takes longer than you might expect and feels like a small gift each time it happens.
