About Oppland
We made it eventually, of course, though my dignity remained somewhere back near that icy bend, probably consoling itself with a hot chocolate. The cabin itself appeared through the trees like something from a postcard I'd have dismissed as overly sentimental. Red wooden walls, a proper pitched roof, and that particular hush that only comes when snow has done its excellent job of muffling the world. My first impression, standing there with a boot full of luggage and slightly trembling hands, was that I had accidentally booked us into someone's particularly wholesome dream. Inside, it smelled of pine and something else I couldn't identify but immediately wanted to bottle. The living area had that wonderful quality of being simultaneously spacious and snug, with a wood-burning stove sitting there like a promise. My youngest made a beeline for the loft bedroom, which she declared "my castle" with the absolute certainty of a six-year-old who has never paid a mortgage. The kitchen was compact but properly equipped, not one of those holiday rentals where you open a drawer to find a single bent teaspoon and a can opener from 1973. I must confess something here. I had packed with the enthusiasm of a man who had watched too many survival programmes. We had enough thermal layers to outfit a small expedition. Enough snacks to survive a siege. A first aid kit that would make a paramedic raise an eyebrow. Standing in that warm, well-appointed cabin, I felt the particular foolishness of the over-prepared. The radiators worked. The hot water was plentiful. There was even WiFi, though I had grandly announced to my family that we would be "disconnecting from the modern world." My wife reminded me of this approximately four minutes after I asked for the password. The first evening, we didn't venture far. The light was fading by half past three anyway, that peculiar Norwegian winter phenomenon that makes you feel wonderfully justified in doing very little. We walked perhaps two hundred metres from the cabin, boots crunching on snow that no one else had trodden, and the children attempted to build something they called a snowman but which looked more like a lumpy tribute to modern art. I stood there with my hands in borrowed gloves, watching my breath cloud in the cold air, and felt something shift. The journey stress, the packing anxiety, the general background hum of ordinary life - it all seemed to have been left behind on that slippery road. We returned to the cabin as darkness properly settled, and I wrestled with the wood stove with the determination of a man proving his worth. It caught eventually, filling the room with that particular orange glow that makes everything feel like a significant moment. My wife produced cheese and bread from the local shop in Lillehammer, and we ate at the wooden table while the children planned tomorrow's adventures with the absolute confidence of those who have not yet learned that plans are merely suggestions. I sat there, slightly smoky from my fire-lighting efforts, and realised that this was precisely what we needed. Not excitement. Not spectacle. Just this - warmth, simplicity, and the quiet satisfaction of having arrived somewhere that felt, already, like it might let us breathe a little more slowly. |
