About Oppland
The thing about Oppland in midsummer is that daylight simply refuses to quit. I'd left Oslo in what felt like late afternoon, and four hours later the sun was still hanging about like a guest who doesn't know when to leave. It's marvellous, really, until you realise you've been driving for ages and your body clock has given up entirely. I kept thinking I must be nearly there, then rounding another bend to find yet another stretch of pine forest and another glinting lake that looked exactly like the last one. When I finally spotted the turn for the property, I nearly missed it entirely. A small wooden sign, weathered to that particular silvery-grey that Norwegian timber seems to achieve within about six months of installation. The gravel track crunched satisfyingly under the wheels, and I found myself crawling along like I was arriving somewhere I ought to whisper. The trees pressed in on both sides, birch and spruce making a proper tunnel of it, and somewhere in the distance I could hear water running. Not dramatic waterfall water, just the steady, patient sound of a stream that had been at it since long before I was born. Then the cabin appeared, and I did that thing where you exhale without meaning to. Red-painted walls, white trim round the windows, a small deck that looked out over nothing but green. The grass was long enough to suggest nobody had fussed over it recently, which suited me perfectly. I've never trusted places that look too manicured on holiday. Give me a bit of benign neglect and I instantly relax. The key was where it was meant to be, which felt like a small miracle given my navigation performance. I fumbled with the lock, still half-expecting some final complication, and stepped inside to that particular smell of wood and disuse and faint cleaning product. The summer light poured through windows I'd need to remember to close against the evening chill, because that's the trick of July in the Norwegian mountains. The days pretend to be Mediterranean, but the moment the sun dips, the temperature remembers it's still Scandinavia. I dumped my bags and went straight to the deck, because that's what you do. The view wasn't dramatic, not fjord-dramatic anyway, but it was relentless in its greenness. Hills rolling away, forest climbing up slopes, and somewhere the sound of that stream again. A bird I couldn't identify made a noise like a rusty gate hinge. I sat there in a t-shirt, feeling smug about the sunshine, and watched a cloud build up over the ridge to the west. Within twenty minutes it had delivered a brief, half-hearted shower that made everything smell even more intensely of pine and wet earth, then wandered off as if embarrassed. That first evening, I cooked badly with ingredients I'd overbought in panic at a supermarket in Lillehammer. The kitchen window framed the slow, slow dusk, that particular northern trick where sunset takes its time, lingering in stages across the sky. I ate on the deck with a jumper I'd had the sense to pack, watching the light shift from gold to grey to a sort of luminous blue that didn't properly darken until nearly midnight. I remember thinking, as I sat there with my undercooked pasta and my overpriced Norwegian beer, that this was exactly the sort of moment I'd imagined and completely failed to plan for. The journey mishap, the dead phone, the slight chaos of arrival - all of it had dissolved into this particular stillness. The season had made it possible, that generosity of light that tricks you into staying up too late, that warmth that feels borrowed and precious. I woke at some point in the small hours, still on the deck, cold enough to need proper thought about moving. The sky was that strange summer-night colour, not dark but deeply blue, and somewhere an animal moved through the trees with complete indifference to my presence. I stumbled inside, found the bedroom by memory, and fell asleep to the sound of that stream, already planning nothing at all for the morning. |
