About Oppland
My partner gave me that look. You know the one. The look that says "I love you but I am currently cataloguing every single thing you have ever done wrong, including that time in 2019 when you forgot our anniversary and blamed the calendar app." I smiled weakly, grabbed the one bag of crisps I had miraculously remembered, and suggested we explore the local area for supplies. She agreed, mostly because the alternative was watching me eat salt and vinegar crisps for three days straight. The cabin itself was everything the website had promised and nothing like my frazzled brain had imagined. Proper timber construction, that gorgeous Nordic smell of pine and woodsmoke, and a veranda that caught the afternoon sun like it had been designed by someone who truly understood the art of doing absolutely nothing. I promptly declared that the shopping could wait until tomorrow. The sun was out, the mountains were doing that dramatic thing they do in Norway, and I had a book I had been meaning to read since approximately 2017. We did venture out eventually, of course. The local shop in Bjorli village supplied us with the essentials: bread, cheese, something that claimed to be fish in a jar, and a truly excessive quantity of chocolate. The woman behind the counter spoke better English than I do, which was both impressive and slightly shaming given my own linguistic limitations extend to ordering beer in three countries and apologising profusely in French. The following days settled into a rhythm so gentle it barely qualified as a rhythm at all. Morning coffee on that sun-drenched veranda, watching the light move across the valley. A slow walk to the nearby river, where I attempted to skim stones and discovered I have the coordination of a moderately drunk toddler. Afternoons with my book, which I actually read this time rather than simply carrying around for photographic purposes. The sun seemed to follow us everywhere, turning laziness into a kind of moral imperative. I had packed hiking boots with serious intentions. They remained by the door, pristine, while I perfected the art of moving from veranda to garden chair and back again. My partner, who is generally more virtuous than I am, did manage a couple of walks along the local trails. She returned with photographs of wildflowers and descriptions of views that sounded exhausting. I nodded appreciatively from my horizontal position and offered her a biscuit. There is something deeply restorative about giving yourself permission to slow down this completely. No itinerary, no must-see attractions, no sense that you are wasting your holiday by not constantly doing something. The Bjorli area does not demand your attention. It simply offers space, quiet, and enough sunshine to make doing very little feel like the most productive thing you could possibly do with your time. On our final morning, I finally opened that jar of fish. It was an experience. Some things, I have learned, are better left as charming local mysteries. We packed the car in that leisurely way you do when you are not remotely ready to leave, and I drove back down the mountain road with considerably more care than I had arrived. The tractor, I noted with satisfaction, was nowhere to be seen. Some lessons, at least, do stick. |
