About North Trondelag
I have never been so happy to see a wooden deck in my entire life. After six hours of driving from Trondheim, two wrong turns involving a sheep that definitely judged me, and one spectacular incident where I managed to spill an entire flask of coffee down my only decent jumper, I finally pulled up to the little holiday home in Namsos. The jumper was ruined. The sheep had won. But the sun was out, and there was a bench facing the water, and I decided right then that I was going to do absolutely nothing for as long as humanly possible.

The mishap with the coffee happened just outside Steinkjer, at what I thought was a scenic lay-by but was actually someone's driveway. A lovely chap came out to ask if I was lost, watched me try to clean brown liquid off my sleeve with a napkin from 2019, and simply said, "Welcome to the north." I took it as a blessing. By the time I reached the property, the jumper was stuffed in a carrier bag and my dignity was somewhere near the E6, but my mood had improbably lifted. There is something about North Trondelag that does this to you. The light is different. The air tastes of pine and salt and something else I cannot name, something that makes urgency feel ridiculous.

The house itself was exactly the sort of unpretentious Scandinavian simplicity that makes you question every overpriced renovation you have ever considered back home. Clean lines, pale wood, windows that seemed designed specifically to frame the fjord like a painting that changes hourly. I dumped my bags with the theatrical exhaustion of a person who had definitely not just sat in a car all day, made a cup of tea that I guarded with my life, and collapsed onto that deck. The sun was low and golden and utterly indifferent to my schedule, which was perfect because I no longer had one.

I had brought three books, a sketchpad I cannot actually use, and a pair of walking boots that I immediately decided were too ambitious. The boots stayed by the door for three days. I read half of one book, kept starting the second and falling asleep, and spent an embarrassing amount of time simply watching a single boat move across the water so slowly that I began to worry I was hallucinating it. I was not. It was just that kind of place. Time stretches here, yawns, forgets to check its watch.

On the second morning I walked to the local shop, a gentle twenty-minute stroll that I stretched to forty by stopping to examine every wildflower I did not know the name of. I bought bread, cheese, and a chocolate bar that I ate on a rock overlooking the water, feeling smug about my excellent life choices. A local dog walker passed and we exchanged the kind of nod that passes for deep friendship in rural Norway. I felt genuinely seen.

The afternoons became a ritual of glorious inertia. Tea, book, deck, sun moving across the sky, me not moving at all. I watched clouds form and dissolve with the patience of a person who had absolutely nowhere else to be. Once I thought about driving to somewhere more exciting, then laughed at myself and made another cuppa instead. The excitement was the lack of it. The luxury was the stillness, the permission I had finally given myself to simply exist in a place without extracting productivity from it.

By day four I had stopped checking my phone. By day five I had forgotten what day it was. The coffee-stained jumper remained in its bag, a memorial to my former frantic self, while I became someone who could spend twenty minutes watching a seagull argue with itself. I have never been more tired in my life, and I have never felt more rested. That is the trick of it, I think. North Trondelag does not ask you to become anything. It just gives you sunshine, water, and time, and lets you remember how to waste them properly.
