About Nordland
The mishap came roughly three minutes later. In my exhausted state, I managed to walk straight into the outdoor storage shed, mistaking it for the main entrance. There I stood, surrounded by kayaks and fishing rods, wondering why the "front door" required me to duck under a canoe. The actual cabin was the handsome building next door, complete with proper steps and everything. I laughed so hard I nearly dropped my suitcase into a puddle. Jet lag does strange things to a person's sense of direction, and apparently my brain had decided that maritime equipment was the appropriate welcome committee. Stepping inside the proper entrance at last, the warmth hit me immediately. The cabin has that wonderful Scandinavian quality of feeling both spacious and snug simultaneously. Wooden beams run across the ceiling, and the windows frame views of the Ofoten landscape so perfectly they might as well be paintings. I kicked off my boots, made the rookie error of walking across the heated floor in just socks, and promptly melted into what I can only describe as a state of profound contentment. The kitchen drew me in first, partly because I was starving and partly because it looked genuinely inviting rather than merely functional. Proper coffee machine, decent knives, a view over the water while you chop vegetables. I made myself a cup of tea that tasted better than any tea has a right to taste, simply because I was drinking it in that particular spot, at that particular moment, after that particular journey. What struck me most was the silence. Not the oppressive, heavy sort, but the clean, restorative kind that makes you realise how much noise you normally tolerate. I opened the patio doors and stood there in my still-damp socks, breathing in air that felt like it had never encountered a traffic jam. The fjord stretched out before me, mountains rising on either side with the kind of casual grandeur that Norwegians probably take for granted but left me slightly gawping. I found myself thinking about how rarely I allow myself to simply stop. No emails demanding attention, no queue of minor errands, no background anxiety about what comes next. Just me, a wooden cabin, and the realisation that I had nearly tried to sleep in a kayak shed. There is something humbling about travel, about being reminded that you are capable of spectacular silliness even as you are surrounded by spectacular beauty. As the evening light began its slow, luxurious fade across the water, I unpacked properly and discovered the sauna. Of course there was a sauna. I laughed again, alone in the quiet, at my earlier self fumbling about in the dark with boats. Some arrivals are smooth and sophisticated. Mine involved a storage shed and damp socks. I would not have changed a single thing. |
