About More And Romsdal
I have never been one for dramatic arrivals, but my entrance to Molde was nothing short of theatrical. There I was, winding through the fjord roads of More og Romsdal, utterly convinced I had mastered Norwegian driving. The scenery was doing its usual obscene beauty routine - mountains wearing little caps of cloud, water so still it looked like someone had forgotten to turn the sky on - and I, genius that I am, decided this was the perfect moment to test whether my hire car's cup holders could handle a takeaway coffee from Alesund. They could not. The resulting brown fountain decorated my jacket, the gear stick, and my dignity. I pulled over somewhere near the Romsdal Alps, laughed until my ribs hurt, and arrived at the holiday home looking like I had lost a fight with a cappuccino machine.

The property sat there like it had been waiting for someone exactly this ridiculous. A traditional wooden place, the sort Norwegians seem to whip up effortlessly, all clean lines and that particular Scandinavian knack for making simplicity feel generous. I dumped my luggage - mostly books, if I am honest, and one pair of walking boots I would use precisely twice - and stood on the terrace with my stained jacket still on. The fjord stretched out like it had nothing better to do than be gorgeous. I decided immediately that neither did I.

My first morning set the tone for everything that followed. I woke without an alarm, which felt borderline illicit, and made coffee that I actually drank from a proper mug like a functioning adult. The terrace became my headquarters. I had brought four novels and was determined to make serious inroads into all of them, though "serious inroads" quickly mutated into "reading three pages, staring at a butterfly, reading one more page, wondering what Norwegians have for lunch." The answer, I discovered, was often something excellent from the local shops in Molde town, which I visited with the unhurried pace of someone who had genuinely forgotten what a deadline felt like.

The sunshine here behaves differently. It does not bully you into productivity. It simply exists, generous and steady, inviting you to match its energy. I found myself doing exactly that. Some days I walked the coastal paths near the property, never straying far, always returning to my terrace throne by afternoon. Other days I did not walk at all. I would position myself in a patch of sun with my book, occasionally glance up to watch boats performing their slow choreography on the water, and feel something in my chest unclench that I had not even realised was tight.

There is a particular pleasure in doing very little properly. Not the restless nothing of scrolling through your phone, but the committed, wholehearted nothing of watching clouds reorganise themselves above a fjord. I became an expert in this. I noted how the light shifted across the mountains through the day. I developed strong opinions about which chair on the terrace caught the best afternoon sun. I spoke to approximately four people in a week and found this ratio entirely satisfactory.

On my final evening, I sat with a glass of something local and watched the sun perform its extended northern exit, painting everything in colours that felt almost embarrassingly beautiful. My coffee-stained jacket had by then achieved legendary status, draped over a chair like a flag of my own incompetence. I thought about how I had arrived in chaos and found something like peace in the aftermath. The books remained largely unread, the walking boots largely unworn, and I could not have cared less. Some holidays are for conquering mountains. This one was for letting mountains remind you that you do not need to conquer anything at all.
