About Hordaland
I have never been so relieved to see a wooden cabin in my life. Twelve hours after leaving Gatwick, including a connection in Bergen that involved sprinting through an airport with a bag of duty-free cheese, I finally arrived at the Vossestrand property near Voss. The cheese, by the way, did not survive the journey intact. It had somehow melted through its wax coating and formed an alliance with my phone charger. I discovered this bonding experience at the car hire desk, where I had to explain why my documents smelled faintly of mature Norwegian brown cheese. The woman behind the counter was far too polite to comment, but her eyebrows told a story of their own.

The drive from Bergen took about an hour and a half, winding through scenery that made me keep pulling over like an overenthusiastic tourist. Waterfalls kept appearing around bends as if Norway was showing off. I nearly caused a minor traffic incident because I became distracted by a fjord view that looked exactly like a desktop wallpaper I had used for three years. The irony was not lost on me.

Finding the property itself proved to be my final challenge. The sat nav confidently directed me down what I can only describe as a track that wished it were a road. My hire car, a sensible Volvo that had done nothing to deserve this treatment, developed an alarming rattle that I chose to ignore through sheer optimism. After twenty minutes of crawling past sheep that judged me silently from the verges, I spotted the cabin. It sat among birch trees with a view across the valley that immediately made the cheese catastrophe fade into insignificance.

Stepping out of the car, the quiet hit me first. Not the absence of noise, exactly, but a different quality of sound altogether. A stream somewhere nearby, wind moving through leaves, and something that might have been a bird or might have been my ears adjusting to altitude. I stood there like a fool with my car door open, just breathing air that tasted of pine and cold water.

The key was exactly where the property instructions had promised, tucked in a little metal box that required the kind of code I always write down wrong. I got it on the third attempt, which I consider a personal best. The door opened with that satisfying weight of proper Scandinavian craftsmanship, and I stepped into warmth that smelled faintly of wood smoke and cleaning products.

The first thing I noticed was the light. The cabin is positioned to catch the afternoon sun, and it poured through windows that framed the mountains like deliberate paintings. I had intended to unpack properly, to be organised and sensible after my long journey. Instead I found myself on the small wooden deck with a cup of tea I had not consciously made, staring at a landscape that seemed almost aggressively beautiful. The sort of beauty that makes you slightly uncomfortable with your own insignificance.

I thought about the cheese then, and the airport sprint, and the rattle in the car. I thought about how I had spent weeks worrying about work deadlines that suddenly felt very far away and very unimportant. There is something about arriving somewhere that demands stillness, something about first impressions that cannot be rehearsed or repeated. The cabin had not asked me to perform or achieve. It simply offered me a place to stop, to breathe, to be slightly overwhelmed by birch trees and mountain light.

The evening brought a soft rain that pattered against the wooden walls like friendly conversation. I cooked a simple meal with supplies from the Voss supermarket, which had been my last stop before the track-that-wished-it-were-a-road. Local trout, some potatoes, nothing ambitious. The kitchen was compact but thoughtfully arranged, the sort of space that suggests someone who actually cooks has planned it.

By nine, the light was finally fading, though reluctantly, as if summer in Norway cannot quite believe it must surrender to darkness even briefly. I sat with the windows open, letting the cold air balance the warmth inside, and felt something unknot in my chest that I had not realised was tight. Travel does this sometimes, strips away the accumulated texture of ordinary life and leaves you raw and receptive. The mishaps become funny in retrospect. The long journey becomes worthwhile. The cheese becomes a story rather than a mess.

I went to bed early, which is unlike me, lulled by silence and the faint sound of that stream I never quite located. The bedroom faced east, and I had already set my alarm for an ungodly hour, possessed by a sudden determination to watch the sunrise over mountains I had only just met. Whether I would actually manage this, given my lifelong commitment to lie-ins, remained to be seen. But that night, falling asleep in clean sheets with wood panelling above me and wilderness beyond the glass, I felt genuinely optimistic about my chances.

Some arrivals feel like endings, the conclusion of effort and planning. This one felt like a beginning, slightly chaotic, unexpectedly moving, and entirely my own.
