About Hordaland
The actual property, when I finally found it, sat quietly above the water with that particular stillness that makes you immediately forget your own incompetence. A traditional white wooden house with a red-tiled roof, it looked exactly as the photographs had promised, which in my experience of holiday rentals is nothing short of miraculous. I dumped my bags with excessive enthusiasm and went straight to the veranda, where a wooden bench faced south across the water towards the distant islands. The afternoon sun was doing that low, golden thing it does so well in late spring, and I decided on the spot that my schedule for the next hour was simply this: sitting. The first evening set the tone for everything that followed. I walked perhaps half a mile along the shoreline path, just enough to stretch my legs and establish that the local terrain was largely flat and friendly to someone whose fitness regime had lapsed somewhat over winter. The path wound through low birch woodland just beginning to show green, with the salt smell of the sea always present. I spotted an oystercatcher doing its comical run along the waterline, that bright orange beak bobbing like a child's toy. By the time I returned, the light had shifted to something softer, and I cooked a simple dinner of local salmon and new potatoes, eaten outside with a glass of wine that tasted better than it probably was. What I had not properly anticipated was how completely the place would slow me down. I had brought three books, a sketchpad I have never successfully used, and vague intentions of day trips. In the event, I read one book very slowly, never opened the sketchpad, and took no trips whatsoever beyond gentle walks from the door. The weather obliged magnificently, delivering five consecutive days of sunshine that felt almost embarrassingly generous. I developed a routine of morning coffee on the veranda, watching the light change on the water, followed by a wander to some slightly different rock or viewpoint, then retreat to a sheltered spot with my novel. The property itself encouraged this laziness. The kitchen was simple and sufficient, the living room comfortable without being distracting, and the bedrooms upstairs had that particular Scandinavian quality of making sleep seem like a genuine accomplishment. I spent one entire afternoon in a hammock I discovered in the garden, reading perhaps ten pages in three hours and dozing through the rest. A bumblebee investigated my bare foot with what I chose to interpret as friendly curiosity. I did not brush my hair. I cannot remember the last time I felt so unbothered by anything. On my final morning, I walked to the small jetty visible from the house and sat with my feet dangling, watching a heron stand motionless in the shallows. I thought about my sheep-related humiliation and smiled, because it had become part of the story now, something to laugh about rather than cringe over. The heron struck at something unseen, swallowed, and resumed its waiting. I understood exactly how it felt. Some places do not demand activity or achievement; they simply offer you the chance to exist pleasantly in sunshine and quiet, and that is precisely what the Sletto gave me. |
