About Hordaland
The sat nav had given up on us somewhere near Os, which I took as a personal slight. We had been bickering about whose fault this was for a solid twenty minutes when the actual lane appeared, unmarked and slightly apologetic, curling down towards Lonningdal. The cottage sat there like it had been waiting patiently for people daft enough to get lost on purpose. First impressions? It smells of pine and something else I could not place. My daughter announced it was "old holidays," which is either profound or nonsense but somehow fit perfectly. The place is proper Norwegian cabin style, not one of those soulless rentals where everything is beige and afraid of itself. Red wooden cladding, a deck that creaks satisfyingly underfoot, windows that actually open wide enough to let the fjord air wander through. I stood on that deck with a cup of tea that I had made badly because I could not work the hob, and I felt something in my shoulders drop about three inches. The funny thing about a family break in a place like this is how quickly the complicated stuff falls away. We arrived with plans, of course. We always do. Fjord cruises, mountain hikes, perhaps something educational. Within two hours we were in our socks playing cards at the wooden table while rain did that soft Norwegian thing against the windows. My son discovered the hammock down by the garden and vanished into it with a book he had no intention of reading. My partner worked out the wood-burning stove with the quiet satisfaction of someone who rarely gets to be the competent one. I kept going back to that view. The property looks out towards Bjornafjorden, though "looks out" feels too passive. It is more like the fjord is just there, being dramatic, whether you are paying attention or not. Mountains rising straight from dark water, clouds doing slow theatre across the peaks. I caught myself trying to take the same photograph about fourteen times, each one worse than the last, before accepting that some things refuse to be captured by someone whose phone storage is mostly screenshots of recipes never made. The self-catering aspect appealed to me more than I expected. There is something grounding about walking to the local shop in Lonningdal, which is really more of a honest conversation with a very small selection of excellent cheese, and planning dinner around what you found. We ate late, outside when the weather allowed, inside with candles when it did not. The children complained less than usual. I think the mountains shamed them into it. What struck me most, sitting there on that second evening with the stove finally mastered and my feet up on furniture I probably should not have put them on, was how little I missed the noise of normal life. Not in a smug digital-detox way. I still checked my phone. I still worried about work emails I was not answering. But the worry sat differently here, less urgent, more like background weather. We have days ahead of us still. Proper hikes, perhaps that boat trip, definitely more of that cheese. But already I know what I will remember. The goat. The wrong turn. The smell of pine and old holidays. The particular peace of arriving somewhere that asks nothing of you except to be there, slightly lost, exactly where you meant to end up. |
