About Hordaland
I have never been so relieved to see a wooden cabin in my life. After a flight to Bergen, a train journey that made me feel like I was gliding through a postcard, and a car hire that involved me trying to pronounce "Myrkdalen" to a very patient man at the desk, I finally arrived at the holiday home near Voss. That is when the mishap struck. In my eagerness to get out of the car and breathe that famous Norwegian air, I managed to trip over my own rucksack and send my phone skittering across the gravel. It landed face down, of course. I stood there frozen, convinced I had shattered my only map, camera, and connection to the outside world. When I finally picked it up, not a scratch. The phone was fine. My dignity, however, was in pieces. A neighbour watering some plants definitely saw the whole thing. I gave a cheerful wave as if I had meant to do it. They did not wave back.

The cabin itself made up for everything. It sits in Hordaland with that classic Norwegian look, all wood and angles and enormous windows that seem to invite the mountains inside. I threw open the door and just stood there for a moment, letting the quiet settle over me. It was the kind of quiet that makes you realise how much noise you normally carry around in your head. The sort of quiet that says, stop rushing, you absolute fool, you tripped over your own bag not five minutes ago.

I decided then and there that this would be a holiday of doing very little, and doing it gloriously. The sun was out, which apparently is not guaranteed even in summer, so I treated it like a personal gift. I found a weathered wooden chair on the small deck, positioned it to catch the light just so, and sat down with a book I had been pretending to read for months. This time I actually read it. A chapter, a pause to watch a bird I could not identify, another chapter, a wander down to the edge of the property to see what I could see. That was the rhythm. No itinerary, no pressure, no sense that I ought to be somewhere else doing something more impressive.

The local area around Myrkdalen and Voss does not demand constant activity, which suits me perfectly. There are gentle paths that wind through the landscape without punishing your knees or your pride. I walked one that followed a stream for perhaps twenty minutes, then turned around because I felt like it. On another day I drove barely ten minutes to find a spot by a lake, spread a blanket, and lay there watching clouds rearrange themselves into shapes that looked increasingly like my ex-boyfriend. I chose not to overthink that.

Back at the cabin, the sunshine made everything feel like a slow-motion film. I made coffee in a pot that took ages and tasted better for it. I ate bread and cheese that I had bought in Voss, cutting thick slices and not caring about carbohydrates. I read until my eyes felt heavy, then napped without setting an alarm. The gentle exploration of doing almost nothing became the whole point. No fjord cruises, no adrenaline sports, no ticking off famous sights. Just me, a wooden chair, a book, and the sun moving slowly across the sky.

On my last evening, I sat outside with a mug of something warm and watched the light turn golden on the hills. I thought about how I had arrived in such a fluster, tripping and waving at strangers, and how the place had slowly untangled me. There is something humbling about a holiday that asks nothing of you. No performance, no achievement, no story to tell later except that you were there, and it was enough. I had not even taken many photos. My phone stayed mostly in my pocket, unbroken and unneeded.

I left the cabin early, driving back through mist that clung to the valleys like something from a fairy tale. The patient man at the car hire desk did not recognise me, or perhaps pretended not to. Either way, I drove away smiling, slightly sunburned in that satisfying way that proves you did absolutely nothing productive, and already wondering when I could return to do even less.
