I have never been so grateful for heated seats in my life. That was my first thought, wedged into a hire car somewhere between Bergen and what I hoped was our cabin in Kvamskogen, watching raindrops race each other down the passenger window in late October. My partner was navigating, which meant her phone was balanced on her knee, the charging cable had already snapped in half, and we had just missed the turning to Norheimsund for the second time. The mishap, though, came three minutes later when I confidently announced we needed to "just nip down this track" and promptly buried the front wheels in a gravel driveway that belonged, apparently, to a very patient sheep farmer.

He appeared from nowhere, hood up against the drizzle, and explained in excellent English that tourists do this roughly twice a week. He also explained, with what I can only describe as Norwegian politeness, that our actual cabin was another four hundred metres up the proper road. He did not laugh. I think that made it worse.

We arrived properly twenty minutes later, pulling up to a red wooden cabin with white trim that looked exactly like the photographs except soggier. The surrounding birch trees had dropped most of their leaves, and the ones remaining clung on in shades of mustard and rust that the grey sky somehow made more vivid, not less. Autumn in Hordaland does not apologise for itself. It simply is: damp, dramatic, and slightly demanding.

The key was in the lockbox as promised. I fumbled with the code, fingers stiff from gripping the steering wheel, and stepped inside to the smell of wood and something faintly citrus from the cleaning products. The cabin was warm, someone having sensibly left the heating on low, and the contrast with the raw weather outside felt almost indecent. I stood in the hallway dripping onto the mat, suddenly aware that I had packed two jumpers and seventeen snack bars but no proper waterproof trousers.

That first evening, we did almost nothing. The rain intensified, drumming against the windows with the kind of persistence that suggests it has nowhere else to be. We lit the wood-burning stove, which took three attempts and a small crisis of confidence, then sat with mugs of something hot and watched the light fade ridiculously early. By half past four it was properly dark, and the cabin felt like a small wooden ship in a friendly sea of pine and birch. The seasonal darkness had already begun its encroachment, that particular Norwegian autumn transition where each day surrenders a few more minutes to the night, and I found it unexpectedly comforting rather than oppressive. There was nowhere to go, nothing to achieve, no daylight to waste.

I had worried, briefly, that coming to Kvamskogen in late October was a mistake. The hiking trails would be muddy, the famous fruit blossoms of the Hardangerfjord long finished, the summer crowds departed. But standing at the window that first morning, watching mist curl through the valley below while the stove ticked and cooled, I understood that the season was not a diminished version of something better. It was its own complete thing. The autumn had stripped the landscape down to essentials: dark water, bare branches, the occasional flash of red from a lingering rowan berry. It demanded a different kind of attention, slower and more patient, and I was still learning how to give it.

The sheep farmer, I decided, had probably understood this for years.
