About Buskerud
I have never been brilliant at reading maps, which is how I ended up driving three times round the same roundabout near Drammen convinced I was being clever and avoiding tolls. Turns out I was just going in circles. My partner sat there with that particular expression of long-suffering patience, the one that says "I told you to download the offline map" without actually saying it. By the time we finally spotted the turn for Storsand, I was ready to eat my own shoe.

The cottage sat perched above the Oslofjord looking improbably picturesque, like something from a brochure I would normally dismiss as unrealistic. Red wooden walls, white trim, and a deck that practically demanded a cup of tea and some serious staring at water. I bounded out of the car with the energy of someone who had done none of the driving, promptly tripped over a rogue flagstone, and dropped the shopping bag containing our entire first night's dinner. Six eggs survived. The rest became abstract art on the gravel. This, I decided, set the tone perfectly.

We had stopped at a Meny in Drammen on the way, me filling the trolley with ambitious ingredients while my partner muttered about cupboard space. I bought three types of cheese because the Norwegian dairy section overwhelmed me with options, plus some local lamb from Buskerud that cost enough to make me wince but smelled too good to resist. There was a loaf of proper bread from the bakery section, dense and seeded, plus butter that actually tasted of something. I also grabbed a jar of cloudberry jam because the label looked authentic and I am a sucker for berries I cannot reliably identify.

The kitchen in the cottage turned out to be surprisingly well-equipped, which immediately made me feel guilty about my planned lazy approach. Someone had actually thought about cooking here. Good knives. A decent frying pan. I stood there holding my surviving eggs and felt the weight of expectation. My partner suggested simply scrambling them with some of the bread. I heard "challenge accepted" and decided to attempt a proper Norwegian-style breakfast spread instead.

Morning brought the kind of light that makes amateur photographers dangerous. I was up early, partly from jet lag and partly from determination to visit the local food scene properly. There is a small market that sets up in nearby Svelvik on certain days, and I had checked the dates with the precision of someone planning a military operation. We drove down with empty bags and returning hunger, finding stalls of local produce that made my supermarket sweep feel inadequate. Properly smoked fish, still glistening. Root vegetables with actual soil attached, which I have decided is how you know they are legitimate. An elderly man selling honey from his own hives who spoke excellent English and patiently explained the difference between his summer and autumn varieties while I nodded earnestly and bought both.

Back at the cottage, I attempted to redeem myself with dinner. The lamb became a slow-cooked stew with the root vegetables, some dried mushrooms I had panic-bought, and a splash of the decent red wine we had brought from home. I am not a patient cook. I am a "is it done yet, what about now" cook. But something about that kitchen, with its view down to the water and the quiet that actually felt quiet rather than empty, slowed me down. I stirred and tasted and adjusted with something approaching care. My partner raised an eyebrow but said nothing, which in our language meant approval.

The cloudberry jam became a running joke. I put it on everything. Porridge. The dense bread. A spoonful straight from the jar while staring at the fjord feeling philosophical about life choices. It is tart and floral and nothing like the berry jams of home, and I became slightly obsessed with its particular strangeness.

We found a small fishmonger operating from what looked like a converted garage, selling the day's catch from local boats. I bought mackerel because it was cheap and because the owner showed me how to check the eyes for freshness with the confidence of someone who had done this ten thousand times. Back at the cottage I pan-fried it simply, with just salt and lemon, and ate it on the deck watching the light change. It tasted of the place in a way that restaurant food rarely manages, that particular combination of freshness and context that makes you briefly insufferable to your friends back home.

By our final morning I had relaxed into the rhythm of proper self-catering. No more grand ambitions, no more trying to prove something with complicated recipes. Just good ingredients treated simply, eaten slowly, with nowhere particular to be. I made those last surviving eggs into a decent omelette with the last of the cheese, some herbs I had pinched from a pot on the deck, and we ate in silence that felt companionable rather than awkward.

I left the cloudberry jam in the cupboard for the next guests, a small offering to whoever came after. Partly because airport security would have questions, partly because it felt right to leave something of the place behind. We drove away with the car lighter by several kilograms of food but somehow feeling fuller than I had in months, my partner navigating while I sat in the passenger seat with my phone maps ready, still not entirely trusted with directions but at least now carrying the wisdom of knowing it.
