About Buskerud
I have never been so relieved to see a wooden cabin in my life. After a three-hour drive from Oslo, a wrong turn that took me through what I am fairly certain was someone's farmyard, and one spectacularly ill-advised attempt to overtake a tractor on a gravel road, I finally spotted the Raje peering through the pine trees. I also spotted, rather too late, that my fuel gauge was flirting with empty. The mishap, you ask? I had spent the final twenty minutes of the drive in a state of quiet panic, convinced I would run out of petrol on a Norwegian mountain road with no mobile signal and only my own questionable life choices for company.

The cabin sat in a clearing near Nore og Uvdal, and I will be honest: my first thought was that it looked impossibly neat. Too neat. The sort of place that makes you immediately conscious of your muddy boots and the fact you have been living on service station coffee since Drammen. Red wooden walls, white trim, a small deck that seemed to judge my dishevelled state. I half-expected someone to emerge and ask what business I had bringing this level of chaos to their doorstep.

No one did, of course. The key was exactly where the booking said it would be, tucked in a little metal box that required the sort of delicate fingerwork I no longer possessed after six hours of travel. I dropped it twice. A crow watched from the fence with what I can only describe as professional interest.

Stepping inside, the smell hit me before anything else. Proper wood, not that artificial nonsense, but the genuine article from walls that had seen decades of Norwegian winters. The living area was simple in that deliberate, unapologetic Scandinavian way. A wood-burning stove dominated one corner, looking like it had stories to tell. I ran my hand along the kitchen counter and found myself unexpectedly moved by its plain functionality. No pretence, no performance. Just a space that knew exactly what it was for.

I made the rookie error of opening the wrong cupboard first, discovering a cache of board games rather than the mugs I desperately needed. This felt fitting. The cabin seemed to suggest I slow down, stop treating everything as a mission to be completed. I found the mugs eventually, made terrible coffee with the supplies I had remembered to bring, and stood on that judgmental deck watching the light change over the forest.

The thing about arriving somewhere after a long journey is that you bring all your accumulated tension with you. The near-empty fuel tank, the farmyard detour, the tractor incident that still makes me wince. I stood there with my mediocre coffee and realised I was still braced for the next problem, the next wrong turn. The Raje did not fix this immediately. What it did was offer silence loud enough to notice the habit.

A squirrel darted across the clearing, utterly unconcerned with my arrival. Somewhere in the trees, a woodpecker began its mechanical work. I became aware that my shoulders had dropped perhaps an inch. The stove waited patiently for evening. I had not lit a fire in years, and the prospect felt less like a chore and more like a conversation I needed to relearn.

My fuel situation remained unresolved, technically. That would require another drive, another interaction with Norwegian rural petrol stations, another opportunity for mishap. For now, I let it sit. The Raje had welcomed me in its particular, undemanding way, and I was finally present enough to notice.
