About Buskerud
The drive from Oslo to Eggedal had seemed straightforward enough on paper, but somewhere around the forty-minute mark I found myself squinting at a road sign that appeared to be written in runes rather than Norwegian. My phone, in a fit of seasonal confusion, had decided that late September in Buskerud was the perfect moment to switch to winter mode and send me looping through lanes barely wide enough for a determined sheep. I arrived at the cabin with mud splattered up to the wheel arches, clutching a carrier bag of groceries whose contents had long since surrendered to gravity, and wearing an expression that said I had definitely not packed for the weather that actually existed.

Autumn in Eggedal does not announce itself politely. It arrives with damp boots and a particular quality of light that makes everything look slightly more significant than it really is. The cabin sat among birch trees that had turned the colour of old pennies, their leaves already beginning to carpet the ground in that half-hearted way early autumn leaves do, as if they are not quite committed to falling yet. I stood in the gravel driveway with my ruined shopping and felt the particular chill of a Norwegian September afternoon settling into my inadequate jacket.

The first thing that struck me about the place was the silence, or rather the particular texture of it. Not the flat silence of an empty room, but something layered and alive. A stream somewhere below the property, the occasional rustle of something small reconsidering its position in the undergrowth, and above everything the wind moving through those birch trees with a sound like distant traffic that never arrived. I had packed for crisp blue skies and the kind of autumn weather that appears in brochures. What I got was low cloud and that particular damp cold that seeps into your bones and makes you reconsider every life choice that led you to stand in a Norwegian wood wearing trainers.

The cabin itself felt immediately like a place that understood the season better than I did. The wood burner was already stocked with birch logs, the kitchen had that particular smell of somewhere that has been closed up against the weather, and the windows were slightly fogged at the edges where the warmth inside met the cooling air. I spent my first hour in a performance of domestic competence that involved lighting the fire with more enthusiasm than skill, producing more smoke than heat and a small moment of panic involving a tea towel that had wandered too close to the proceedings.

By evening the temperature had dropped further and I found myself properly grateful for the cabin's solid construction and its apparent immunity to my incompetence. The darkness came early, as it does at that latitude in autumn, not creeping in gradually but arriving with a kind of administrative efficiency around half past six. I sat by the finally-functioning fire with a cup of something hot and watched the last light fade from the sky through windows that reflected my own foolish face back at me, surrounded by the particular orange glow that only a wood fire produces.

There is something about arriving somewhere in the wrong clothes, with the wrong expectations, that strips away any pretence of being a person who has their life together. The autumn weather in Eggedal had no interest in my plans for brisk walks and outdoor dining. It offered instead the opportunity to be indoors while the world outside did whatever it needed to do, and to find that this was not a lesser experience but simply a different one. I went to bed that first night to the sound of rain beginning against the roof, proper rain that meant business, and slept better than I had in weeks.
