About Akershus
The drive from Oslo Airport to Storsand in Hurum should have taken about an hour and twenty minutes, which in my head translated to "roughly an hour, give or take a podcast episode." I had not accounted for my spectacular inability to operate a Norwegian toll road system, nor for the fact that my hire car's sat nav had apparently decided to route us via what I can only describe as a gravel track that felt more suited to goats than a Vauxhall Corsa. Somewhere around the forty-five-minute mark, convinced we were being led to a fjord-side cliff and certain doom, I turned to my partner and announced with misplaced confidence that this was definitely a shortcut. It was not a shortcut. It was a dead end outside someone's rather lovely barn, where three sheep looked at us with the kind of judgement I usually reserve for people who put pineapple on pizza.

By the time we finally found the actual road to the cottage, I had developed what can only be described as a complex relationship with Norwegian signage. The children in the back had moved from "are we there yet" to a profound silence that suggested they were either asleep or plotting my downfall. Both, as it turned out.

Then we turned the final corner, and there it was. The cottage sat nestled among proper coastal woodland, the kind of pine-scented, mossy terrain that makes you feel immediately healthier just by looking at it. The Oslofjord glinted through the trees, and I felt that particular holiday sensation of your shoulders dropping about three inches without you consciously relaxing anything. The sheep incident was already fading.

The key collection was straightforward, which surprised me given my run of luck. A small lockbox, a code, and suddenly we were in. The first thing that struck me was the smell: that clean, slightly woody scent of a place that has been properly aired, not the musty disappointment of some holiday lets I've experienced. The second thing was the light. Large windows facing the water meant the living area was flooded with that particular Scandinavian brightness, even on what was admittedly a fairly grey afternoon.

I will confess to a moment of pure, unadulterated smugness. I had booked this. Me. The person who once accidentally reserved a caravan in Cornwall that had no functioning toilet. This place had not just a functioning toilet but a proper sauna, which felt like the universe's way of apologising for the gravel track debacle.

The children immediately claimed the loft bedroom, apparently drawn to its sloped ceilings and the undeniable appeal of a space their parents would struggle to stand up in. My partner investigated the kitchen with the focused attention of someone who genuinely enjoys cooking on holiday, while I did what I always do: opened every cupboard and drawer with the curiosity of a burglar and the justification of "just getting my bearings."

The kitchen opened onto a wooden deck where a barbecue sat waiting, and beyond that, a path led down toward the water. I stood there with a cup of tea that I had not yet finished making, holding a teabag in one hand and my phone in the other, and felt something shift. The drive, the sheep, the sat nav betrayal - none of it mattered. This was exactly the sort of place where you forget to check your emails, where the biggest decision becomes whether to swim before or after lunch, where you read half a chapter of a book and then fall asleep in a chair.

I finished making that cup of tea eventually. It went cold while I stood on the deck watching a heron work its way along the shoreline. Some mishaps, I decided, are worth it for where they eventually lead you.
