About Zeeland
The mishap came just past Middelburg, where I confidently directed us down what I swore was a shortcut. It turned out to be a cycle path. A very determined Dutch cyclist waved us along with a mixture of pity and amusement as we crept past at walking pace, our roof box probably grazing his handlebars. I made a mental note to never again mock my mother for her own satnav disasters. Karma, as they say, arrives with excellent timing and a bicycle bell. We found the proper road eventually, winding through flat green fields that seemed to stretch forever in that particular Zeeland way, dykes holding back the water, sky taking up most of the view. Wemeldinge itself appeared suddenly, a proper village with neat brick houses and that sense of tidy Dutch order that makes you immediately conscious of your own car's biscuit-crumb interior. The holiday home sat on a quiet residential street, nothing flashy, just a solid red-brick place with a small front garden and a bicycle leaning against the neighbour's fence. I fumbled with the key safe code I'd photographed on my phone three days prior, my fingers suddenly useless with that particular travel fatigue that makes simple tasks feel like advanced cryptography. The door clicked open and we stumbled inside, blinking like owls. The first thing that hit me was the smell. Not the musty rental fug I'd braced for, but something clean and faintly of pine, with that particular North Sea holiday home freshness. The second thing was the silence. Proper silence, broken only by a distant seagull and my own breathing. After six hours of motorway and bickering, it felt almost religious. The living room opened onto a back garden, modest but meticulously kept, with a patio table and chairs that looked genuinely used rather than decorative. Through the kitchen window I could see the neighbour's washing line, someone's towels flapping in that persistent coastal breeze. It felt immediately, comfortingly, like a place where actual people lived actual lives. I made the mistake of declaring I'd unpack while my partner investigated the village. Twenty minutes later I was still sitting on the edge of the double bed, staring out at a garden hedge, feeling the journey finally drain out of my shoulders. The bedding was that slightly stiff, freshly-laundered cotton that rental places always have. Somewhere distant, a church clock struck. I realised I'd been holding my breath without knowing it. My daughter found me there and wordlessly climbed onto my lap, equally stunned into stillness. We sat watching a blackbird work its way along the hedge, and I thought about how rarely we allow ourselves this, the unscheduled pause, the arrival before the doing. There would be beaches tomorrow, probably the Oosterschelde, maybe a walk along the dyke. Tonight there was just this, a quiet house in a village I'd never heard of six months ago, the particular golden light of a Zeeland evening coming through unfamiliar windows. My partner returned with bread from the village bakery, still warm, and we ate it plain at the kitchen table with butter and silence, too tired for proper conversation, too content to need it. |
