About Zeeland
I have never been so relieved to see a windmill in all my life. There we were, three hours into what should have been a two-hour drive from Rotterdam, and my phone had just cheerfully announced we were approaching Brussels. Brussels. I had managed to navigate us clean through Zeeland and into Belgium, all because I had tapped "fastest route" rather than "shortest route" and then spent twenty minutes arguing with my wife about whether the giant bridge we crossed was definitely the wrong one. Spoiler: it was definitely the wrong one.

The mishap meant we arrived at our Bruinisse cottage well after dark, which is not how you want to first encounter a new holiday let. I was bracing for the worst. But then this proper little gem emerged from the gloom, all white walls and tidy garden, and suddenly my navigational shame felt almost worth it. Almost.

The key was in one of those lockbox affairs, the kind I always struggle with in the rain. This time was no exception. I stood there fumbling and muttering while my children watched from the car windows, no doubt placing bets on how long before Dad asked for help. The code worked eventually, and we stepped inside to that particular smell of a well-kept Dutch cottage: clean, slightly woody, with the faintest suggestion of the sea somewhere in the mix.

First impressions matter on a family break, do they not? You want that immediate sense that yes, this will do nicely, the kids will not mutiny, your spouse will not give you that look. The living room delivered. Proper sofas, not the ornamental kind. A dining table that actually seated six without anyone having to balance a plate on their knee. My youngest made a beeline for the corner with the games and discovered a set of playing cards that looked older than me, which naturally meant we had to test them immediately.

The kitchen was one of those compact but clever setups the Dutch seem to specialise in. Everything within arm's reach, nothing fussy. I made tea with the efficiency of someone who has earned it through three hours of accidental tourism. My wife explored the bedrooms upstairs, reporting back that the beds were made, the duvets looked genuinely fluffy, and there was a small balcony off the main bedroom that would be lovely in morning light. I filed this away for my eventual apology breakfast.

What struck me most, wandering about in that first hour, was the quiet. Not the oppressive kind, but the proper restful sort. Bruinisse is not pretending to be anything grand. It is a working harbour village with mussel farming in its bones, and our cottage sat in that perfect spot where you feel tucked into something authentic rather than staged for visitors. Through the back windows, darkness still, I could sense the flat landscape beyond, those characteristic Zeeland fields and waterways waiting to be discovered.

I found myself standing at the kitchen sink later, rinsing mugs, reflecting on how thoroughly I had botched the journey yet how completely the destination was redeeming it. There is something humbling about family holidays, is there not? You plan and navigate and attempt control, and then you get lost and arrive late and it turns out fine anyway. Better than fine, actually.

The children were already asleep in unfamiliar beds. My wife had poured a small glass of wine and was examining a local map with the enthusiasm of someone plotting escape routes. I joined her, still slightly damp, still slightly sheepish, and properly content for the first time that day.

Tomorrow we would explore properly. The harbour, perhaps a bike ride along the flat paths, definitely those mussels everyone mentions. But that first night, surrounded by the gentle unfamiliarity of a good cottage in a good place, was its own small victory. I had got us lost, but I had also got us here. Sometimes that is enough.
