About Zeeland
I should have known the sat nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through a field outside Middelburg. Twelve hours after leaving Derby, three ferries, two arguments about whose turn it was to choose the music, and one spectacularly wrong turn later, we finally rolled into Bruinisse. My partner had that particular set to her jaw that meant I was definitely buying dinner later.

The mishap came during our final approach. I spotted what I thought was our holiday home on the Novasol listing - white walls, tidy little garden, that unmistakable Zeeland cottage look - and practically reversed through the hedge in my eagerness to stop moving. I was halfway out of the car, stretching my legs and making grand pronouncements about "finally being here," when an elderly gentleman appeared from next door holding a watering can and looking deeply unimpressed. Wrong house. Ours was two doors down, nearly identical but crucially lacking the furious Dutch pensioner. I performed what I can only describe as a mortified bow and scurried back to the driver's seat while my partner made a noise somewhere between a cough and outright hysterics.

The actual property, when we found it, immediately forgave my stupidity. A proper Bruinisse cottage, compact but somehow generous with its space, with those big windows that seem to pull in every scrap of the extraordinary Zeeland light. Even in late afternoon, the place glowed. I stood in the doorway like a lemon while my partner swept past me, already investigating the kitchen with the focused intensity of someone who had survived motorway service station coffee for too long.

The first thing that struck me was the stillness. Not silence exactly - there was birdsong, distant water, the occasional bicycle bell - but a quality of quiet that felt almost physical after the endless drone of the M1 and the ferry engines. Bruinisse sits on the Grevelingenmeer, that vast saltwater lake created when the Delta Works sealed off the estuary, and you can feel that watery presence everywhere. Even before you've seen it properly, you sense the flat horizon waiting just beyond the houses.

I made the traditional holiday error of immediately trying to do everything at once. Unpack the car, inspect every cupboard, work the heating, locate the nearest place to buy bread, photograph the garden for my mother, and somehow simultaneously "settle in" with a cup of tea. The cottage watched me indulgently. These places have seen generations of British tourists arrive in precisely this state of frazzled overexcitement. The sensible Dutch design - everything in its logical place, nothing unnecessary - gradually slowed my pulse.

My partner found the terrace just as the light was turning golden. We sat with our bags half-unpacked around us, drinking mediocre tea from travel mugs because we hadn't located proper ones yet, watching a heron pick its way through the reedy edge of a nearby waterway. I became aware that I was still wearing one shoe and one slipper from my earlier frantic unloading. Neither of us mentioned it.

That first evening, we walked the five minutes to the small harbour, still a bit dazed from travel. The fishing boats sat low in the water, and locals moved about with that unhurried coastal purpose you find in working harbours everywhere. Someone waved at us, presumably mistaking us for people who knew what we were doing. We waved back, complicit in our own fraudulence.

Back at the cottage, I finally unpacked properly, finding the little details that make these Novasol properties feel genuinely lived-in rather than institutional. A decent set of kitchen knives. Proper cushions on the sofa, not the defensive plastic kind. Books in Dutch that I couldn't read but appreciated anyway. I stood in the compact bathroom, staring at my road-worn reflection, and felt something in my shoulders finally drop.

The mishap with the wrong house became our first proper holiday story by bedtime, already exaggerated in the telling. I suspect the elderly gentleman has his own version, probably featuring the idiot Englishman who tried to colonise his begonias. But sitting in that unexpected peace, with the particular quality of Bruinisse darkness settling outside and nothing more pressing than tomorrow's decision about which direction to cycle, I knew the sat nav's final wrong turn had somehow delivered me exactly where I needed to be.
