About Overijssel
I should have known the sat-nav was up to no good when it tried to send me through a field outside Zwolle. Three hours from the Eurotunnel, two wrong turns, and one spectacular argument with a Dutch roundabout later, we finally spotted the sign for Ommen. My partner was asleep in the passenger seat, mouth slightly open, while I clutched the steering wheel like a man who'd just survived a minor military operation.

The mishap came at the final hurdle. I misread the property instructions and tried the wrong key in the lock, jiggling it with increasing desperation until the neighbour's cat wandered over to judge me. Turned out I was at number seven, not number nine. The actual house sat twenty metres further down, half-hidden behind a proper Dutch hedge that looked like it had been trimmed with a spirit level and a deep sense of national pride.

Stepping inside, the first thing that hit me was the smell. Not the musty holiday-let pong I'd braced for, but something warm and woody, like someone had actually cared about the place. The living room opened up with these enormous windows overlooking the garden, and beyond that, nothing but proper Overijssel countryside. Flat fields, big sky, a few sheep looking profoundly uninterested in our arrival.

I stood there in my socks - I'd abandoned my shoes at the door like a good guest, then immediately stepped in something damp and questioned every life choice - and just breathed out. The journey tension started leaking out of my shoulders. My partner woke up, wandered in still half-asleep, and promptly walked into the coffee table. The curse of low Dutch furniture. We both laughed, that slightly hysterical laugh of people who've been in a car too long and are now slightly delirious with relief.

The kitchen was one of those compact Dutch numbers where everything has a specific home and you feel vaguely judged for your own kitchen's chaos. I made tea with the tiny hob, burned my finger on the kettle, and declared it the best cuppa I'd had in days. Perspective, I suppose.

What struck me most was the quiet. Not silence exactly - there were birds, distant tractors, the occasional bicycle bell - but a kind of spaciousness to the sound. Coming from London, my brain kept waiting for the background hum of traffic that never came. It felt almost theatrical, like someone had forgotten to turn on the ambient noise track.

I unpacked badly, as is my tradition, leaving a trail of bags and good intentions through the hallway. Found the bedroom upstairs with its slanted ceiling that I immediately whacked my head on. Some lessons you apparently need to learn repeatedly. The bed looked genuinely comfortable though, not the usual holiday-let torture device dressed up with a nice throw.

By evening, we sat on the little terrace with our sad supermarket wine and watched the light change over the fields. I'd made a complete hash of the journey, argued with inanimate objects, and would definitely hit my head again tomorrow. But sitting there, with the particular golden quality of Dutch evening light that I can't quite describe, I felt something shift. The mishaps hadn't mattered. They were just the price of admission for this feeling, this particular moment of being somewhere else, somewhere slower, somewhere that smelled of wood polish and possibility.

Tomorrow we'd explore properly, find the river Vecht, maybe rent bikes and wobble around like the tourists we absolutely were. But for now, arrival was enough.
