About Northern Holland
First impressions? The damp. Not miserable damp, mind you. The sort of purposeful damp that comes with the season, when everything's been breathing in North Sea air for months. The cottage sat there in its traditional Dutch style, all proper and gabled, looking slightly smug about its thick walls. I fumbled with the key box, fingers already going that particular autumn numbness where they work but don't feel like yours anymore. The door opened with a satisfying heft, and the smell hit me - woodsmoke from the stove, definitely, plus that closed-up holiday home scent of clean linen and slightly elderly furniture. The heating had been on, bless whoever manages these places. October in Northern Holland doesn't mess about. I stood in the hallway stamping my feet like a horse, shedding layers onto a bench that had probably seen forty years of similar arrivals. The living room was all low beams and that particular orange glow you only get when daylight's fading and lamps are warming up. I immediately developed the seasonal urge to do absolutely nothing for several hours, possibly with a biscuit. The kitchen window looked out over what I knew would be water, though at that hour it was simply a darker stripe between land and sky. The IJsselmeer was out there, doing its autumn thing, and I could already imagine the wind that would come with morning. The fridge held the basics left by the owners - proper Dutch cheese, some eggs, that thick brown bread that looks like it could survive a nuclear winter. I made tea with the sort of concentration the tired deserve, standing at that window watching the last light leak away. There's something about arriving at a holiday let in the shoulder season that feels slightly illicit, like you've snuck into a place meant for summer people. The garden furniture was stacked and covered. The little terrace would be optimistic at best until spring. Yet the cottage wore its autumn occupancy comfortably, as if it preferred the quiet. I found blankets folded with military precision. The wood basket was full. Someone understood that Northern Holland in late October rewards the prepared and punishes the optimistic. I lit the stove with the confidence of someone who'd watched exactly one YouTube video on the subject. It caught, eventually, after some muttering and a small panic about whether the flue was open. The warmth spread slowly, fighting the chill that had settled into the stone floors and probably the walls themselves. I sat on the sofa, which had that slight resistance of good Dutch upholstery, and felt the particular pleasure of being indoors while the season did its thing outside. The morning would bring proper exploration - the lanes around Wijdenes, maybe a stomp to see the water properly, certainly a need to find actual milk. But that first evening was simply about settling into the rhythm the season demanded. Early dark, early quiet, the wind starting its conversation with the eaves. I was already grateful for the mishap that had delayed me, because arriving in that particular light, at that particular temperature, meant the cottage could show me exactly what it offered in autumn. Not the summer version, all bicycles and barbecues. The honest version. The one with the stove and the blankets and the cheese that tasted better because you'd earned it simply by being there when most sensible people had stayed home. |
