About Northern Holland
The mishap came as I reached for my phone to confirm the cottage address, only to discover it sitting smugly on the kitchen counter sixty miles south. No signal, no screenshot, no clue. We circled the same roundabout three times, growing increasingly hysterical, until a man walking an enormous dog took pity and pointed us toward the holiday park with the kind of patient smile reserved for obvious tourists. The Heiloo cottage revealed itself through a veil of fine drizzle, and I will confess my heart sank momentarily. The wooden exterior had that weathered, end-of-winter grey, and the surrounding garden lay dormant and muddy, all promise of tulips and greenery still weeks away from fulfilment. It looked, to my travel-weary eyes, rather like a large shed someone had forgotten about. Then we stepped inside. The contrast was almost comical. Where outside February clung damp and insistent, inside warmth enveloped us instantly. The underfloor heating, that glorious Dutch invention, radiated through terracotta tiles. A proper wood-burning stove sat ready-stacked, and someone had left the lights on low, creating pools of amber against the gathering dark outside. I stood there in my still-damp coat, suddenly aware that my entire judgment of the place had hinged on exterior aesthetics during the most unforgiving month of the year. That evening, we ventured nowhere. The seasonal darkness pressed against the windows by half past five, and the rain had settled into a steady rhythm that would have made any outing feel like an endurance test. Instead we lit the stove, opened the wine we had fortunately remembered, and watched the flames consume apple wood while outside the Dutch winter did its worst. There is something peculiarly satisfying about being warm and dry when the weather performs so aggressively beyond the glass. Morning brought a transformation I had not expected. The rain had cleared to reveal a pale, watery sunshine that transformed the flat landscape into something almost luminous. The garden, so unpromising in yesterday's gloom, showed the first fat buds on dormant shrubs. A heron picked its way across the neighbouring field, that distinctive Dutch agricultural geometry visible in every direction. The season had stripped everything back to essentials, and in that stripping revealed a quiet beauty I might have missed entirely in lusher months. We walked to the local bakery for warm broodjes, our breath visible, the cold air sharpening everything. The woman behind the counter spoke to us in rapid Dutch, laughed kindly at our confusion, and switched effortlessly to English. Everyone seemed to understand that February visitors required particular coddling. By our final evening, I had grown almost defensive of the season that had initially disappointed me. Yes, the evenings were long and the gardens sparse. But the cottage had become a sanctuary precisely because of what waited outside, and the landscape's restraint felt honest, unperformed for tourists. I sat by that stove one last time, slightly sunburned from an unexpectedly bright afternoon walk, and understood that Heiloo in February had given me exactly what I needed, even if I had arrived too foolish to recognise it. |
