About Northern Holland
The mishap came during unpacking. I had insisted on bringing my "essential" travel kettle, a contraption I have dragged to Cornwall, the Lake District, and now the Netherlands. I plugged it in, triumphant, only to discover I had packed the wrong adapter back in March and apparently never corrected this. There I stood, kettle in one hand, two-pin plug in the other, realising I had essentially brought a small useless metal sculpture on holiday. My partner found this hilarious. I found it less so, until I remembered we were in Northern Holland, where everything moves at a pace that makes a broken kettle feel like a genuine blessing rather than a disaster. The property itself, a traditional Dutch holiday home, revealed itself slowly. White painted wood, a proper thatched roof you want to reach up and touch, and a garden that smelled of recently cut grass and something floral I could not identify. I did not try very hard to identify it, to be honest. That was rather the point. We spent the first afternoon doing almost nothing, which sounds unremarkable until you consider how rarely one achieves actual nothing. I sat in a deckchair with a book I had been meaning to read since approximately 2019, read three pages, and fell asleep in sunshine so consistent it felt almost theatrical. My partner pottered about with a cup of proper coffee made in the actual kitchen, because some people plan ahead and pack correct adapters or simply use what is provided. I woke to the sound of a bicycle bell from the lane beyond the hedge, a sound so quintessentially Dutch that I smiled without quite knowing why. The village of Dirkshorn does not demand much of you, which is precisely its gift. There is a modest high street with a bakery where we fetched bread still warm from the oven, a few shops selling practical things, and that duck pond I had grown so fond of. We walked there on the second morning, slowly, because the flatness of the landscape seems to invite slowness. The sky here is doing something different than at home, stretching wider somehow, making you feel pleasantly small. I found myself noticing things I normally rush past: the particular red of a bicycle parked against a wall, the way locals greet each other with nods that seem to contain entire conversations. We cycled one afternoon to nearby Schagen, perhaps twenty minutes along proper cycle paths where cars actually respect your existence, which remains startling to a British person. Schagen offered a market square, more coffee, and the profound pleasure of watching other people go about ordinary lives in a place that is not your own. Then we cycled back, slowly, because we could. The days developed a rhythm I have rarely achieved on holiday. Morning coffee in the garden, watching birds I could not name. A walk or a cycle to somewhere nearby, or nowhere in particular. Lunch that stretched into afternoon. More reading, more sleeping, more of that particular sunshine that seems to make doing nothing feel like an accomplishment rather than a waste. I finished my book on the fourth day, a personal record of sorts, and immediately started another with the satisfied laziness of someone who has nowhere to be. I thought, sitting there on the final evening with a glass of wine and the thatched roof silhouetted against that enormous sky, about how often I return from holidays needing another holiday. Not this time. The wrong-turn sat nav arguments, the useless kettle, even the initial panic of rural quietness, all of it had settled into something like contentment. Northern Holland does not shout for your attention. It simply offers space, light, and the radical notion that you might stop trying to be productive for a week. We left the kettle behind, deliberately. Let it become someone else's sculpture. |
