About Northern Holland
The property sat tucked among tall pines on a quiet lane, the kind of place where you immediately lower your voice without quite knowing why. I fumbled with the key box for several embarrassing minutes, convinced I had the wrong code, before realising I was holding the instructions upside down. This set the tone rather nicely. But then the door opened, and the mishaps of the journey simply stopped mattering. The first thing that struck me was the light. Northern Holland does something extraordinary with afternoon sunshine, filtering it through those coastal pines so it falls across the wooden floors in soft, shifting patterns. I dropped our bags with theatrical exhaustion and made straight for the terrace, where a weathered wooden table and a pair of slightly mismatched chairs waited in a patch of sun. Within ten minutes I was horizontal on a lounger with a book I had no real intention of finishing, watching my partner attempt to decipher the coffee machine with the serious concentration of a bomb disposal expert. We did not venture far that first day. Bergen itself is that rare sort of place where doing very little feels like a genuine achievement rather than wasted time. The village centre lies perhaps fifteen minutes on foot, close enough for provisions but far enough that you feel pleasantly removed from anything resembling bustle. We wandered there eventually, passing neat gardens and the occasional cat sunning itself on a windowsill, and bought bread and cheese from a small shop where the owner patiently tolerated my attempts at Dutch with the benevolent smile of someone who has seen it all before. The real pleasure, though, was returning to that terrace. The holiday home had been designed with indolence in mind, and I respected this deeply. I read the same paragraph approximately twelve times, distracted by birdsong and the distant sound of someone cycling past without a care. My partner dozed in a chair, waking only to announce that he might move to the other chair for a change of perspective. This he did, with great ceremony, around four o'clock. I found myself reflecting, somewhere between my second cup of coffee and a vague consideration of whether to open the wine, on how rarely I allow myself this kind of stillness. At home there is always something pressing, some task nagging at the edges of relaxation. Here, with nothing but pine trees and sunshine for company, the very concept of productivity seemed faintly absurd. The book remained largely unread, and I did not mind at all. The evening brought a chill that sent us inside, but even then the laziness continued. We cooked simply, ate slowly, and watched the light fade through those same tall trees. Tomorrow we might cycle to the nearby Schoorl dunes, or we might not. The decision felt deliciously unimportant. For now, Bergen had already given us exactly what we needed: permission to slow down, to sit in the sun, and to let a small navigational embarrassment become nothing more than a story to tell over breakfast. |
