I should have known the sat nav was up to no good when it tried to send me through a field outside Breda. Three hours from the Eurotunnel, two coffees, one heated debate about whether we had packed the charging cables, and there I was, squinting at a tractor and wondering if this was some sort of Dutch shortcut I had not been told about. My other half, ever the optimist, suggested we "follow our instincts." Our instincts, it turned out, were rubbish. We ended up in a cul-de-sac in Oudenbosch, where a very patient woman explained we had driven past Oud Gastel twenty minutes ago. Classic us.

The actual arrival at the holiday home felt like stumbling onto a film set after that little detour. There it sat, a proper traditional Brabant long-gable farmhouse, all red brick and neat white trim, with a garden so tidy I immediately felt guilty about the state of our car boot. The owners had left the key in a lockbox with a code that I promptly forgot, standing there in the drizzle punching in variations of our wedding anniversary until my partner gently took over. I laughed it off, but honestly, there is something about that first moment at a new place that strips you bare. You are tired, slightly disoriented, and suddenly very aware that you are about to live in someone else's space for a week. Will you break something? Will the shower make sense? Will the neighbours judge your parking?

The interior stopped that spiral nicely. Exposed wooden beams, a proper farmhouse kitchen with a table you could imagine generations of families gathering round, and a wood-burning stove that I immediately decided was my new best friend. The owners had left a bottle of local beer and a note wishing us a pleasant stay in excellent English. I felt the shoulders drop. The mishap with the sat nav already seemed like someone else's story.

I wandered out to the garden while my partner unpacked with military precision. The property backs onto proper Brabant countryside, flat and green and somehow very still after the chaos of the journey. A heron lifted off from the drainage ditch beyond the fence. I stood there in my socks, because I had forgotten to put shoes back on after the drive, and just breathed. That particular smell of damp earth and cut grass, the faint whiff of a neighbour's wood fire somewhere down the lane. It is funny how quickly a place can claim you, if you let it.

The village of Oud Gastel itself revealed itself slowly that first evening. We walked to the local supermarket for supplies, passing neat brick houses with lace curtains and the occasional furiously barking dog. The church tower chimed eight o'clock. Everything felt very Dutch in the best way: organised, understated, quietly proud. We bought bread and cheese and more of that local beer, then retreated to our farmhouse kitchen where I managed to set off the smoke alarm making toast. Some things, apparently, follow you everywhere.

Sitting there as darkness fell, feet up, toast slightly burnt, I caught myself grinning like an idiot. The journey had been long, the sat nav had betrayed me, my sense of direction remained catastrophic. None of it mattered. This was exactly the sort of slow, unglamorous, deeply satisfying start to a holiday that I had needed without knowing it. The wood stove crackled. My partner rolled their eyes at my toast. Outside, the Brabant night settled in, soft and complete.
