About North Brabant
I should have known the satnav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through a field of very unimpressed-looking cows. There I was, pootling through North Brabant in my slightly too-full hatchback, convinced I was minutes from my holiday cottage in Oud Gastel, when suddenly the road turned to gravel, then mud, then what I can only describe as a philosophical question about whether this counted as a road at all. A farmer leaning on a gate watched me execute a twelve-point turn with the kind of silent judgement that only the Dutch can muster. I waved cheerily. He did not wave back.

Forty minutes later, having found actual tarmac and my actual destination, I pulled up to the cottage with the slightly manic grin of someone who has survived a minor ordeal. And there it sat: a proper Brabantian charmer, all red brick and sensible gables, with a garden that looked like it had been waiting patiently for someone to do absolutely nothing in it.

The key was exactly where promised, which felt like a small miracle given my navigational track record. I pushed open the door and was immediately struck by that particular stillness you only get in countryside cottages, the kind that makes you realise how much noise you normally carry around in your own head. The living room had that slightly old-fashioned cosiness I adore - nothing aggressively modern, just comfortable furniture and the promise of many hours with my feet up. I dumped my bags with theatrical exhaustion and headed straight for the garden.

The sunshine was having a rare old time of it, so I did what any sensible person would do: absolutely nothing. I found a deckchair that squeaked in a companionable way, positioned it with scientific precision to catch maximum rays, and promptly fell asleep with a book open on my chest. I woke an hour later with a slight sunstrip across one arm and the realisation that I had been drooling slightly. Classy.

That first afternoon set the tone entirely. I wandered down to the village itself, a lazy ten-minute amble through lanes that smelled of warm tarmac and someone's freshly cut grass. Oud Gastel is not trying to impress anyone, which is precisely why I liked it immediately. A church, some tidy houses, a pub where I sat with a biertje watching locals cycle past with that enviable Dutch ease. I attempted to order in my woeful Dutch and the barman, bless him, pretended not to notice, switching to flawless English with the tact of a seasoned diplomat.

Back at the cottage, I discovered the particular pleasure of reading in a garden where the only interruptions are bees who have mistaken your leg for a flower. I had packed three books optimistically and was halfway through the first by day two, mostly because I kept re-reading paragraphs while watching clouds perform slow-motion theatre overhead. The kitchen had everything needed for simple meals, so I made a salad with tomatoes from a nearby farm shop - the sort that actually taste of something - and ate it outside with bread that went slightly crispy in the warmth.

There was a moment, I remember, sitting there with tomato juice on my chin and absolutely no plans, when I felt that particular holiday happiness that has nothing to do with sightseeing or achievement. Just sun, and quiet, and the gentle rhythm of a place that asks nothing of you. I thought about all the holidays where I had rushed about, checking sights off lists, returning home more tired than I left. This was different. This was necessary.

I did explore a little further afield, of course. A gentle cycle to the Mark river, where I sat on the bank and watched a heron stand motionless with more patience than I will ever possess. The water moved slowly, the sun moved slowly, I moved slowly. Everything in Brabant seemed to understand something I was only just learning.

By the end of that first week, my biggest daily decision was whether to move my deckchair six inches to the left. I had finished two books, developed a respectable collection of freckles, and discovered that I am genuinely excellent at doing very little indeed. The satnav mishap on arrival felt like a fitting beginning to a holiday that taught me, gently and persistently, that sometimes the wrong turn leads exactly where you need to be.
