About North Brabant
I have to admit, I had no idea what a "Hoeven" actually was when I booked it. Sounded a bit like someone sneezing, if I'm honest. But there I was, trundling down the A58 with my walking boots in the boot and a head full of dreams about coastal hikes and sunny North Brabant adventures. The sat nav had other ideas, of course. It sent me down what I can only describe as a farm track masquerading as a road, where I promptly got stuck behind a tractor doing approximately four miles per hour for the better part of twenty minutes. I was sweating, late, and increasingly convinced I'd accidentally booked a barn.

The mishap came when I finally spotted the turning. I was so relieved that I reversed without looking properly and backed straight into a ditch. Not a dramatic Hollywood-style ditch, just a soggy North Brabant drainage channel, but enough to leave my rear wheel spinning uselessly. A chap on a bicycle stopped to help, which was kind, though his expression suggested he'd seen this exact scene play out with tourists countless times before. Between us we managed to push the car out, my trainers now thoroughly caked in what I chose to believe was mud.

I arrived at the Hoeven proper about forty minutes later than planned, still slightly damp and smelling of agricultural optimism. And I'll tell you what, that first impression made every moment worthwhile. The place sits among proper Brabant countryside, all flat fields and big skies, with that distinctive red-brick farmhouse architecture that makes you feel like you've wandered into a particularly well-maintained painting. My particular cottage had a terrace out front where I immediately deposited myself with a cup of tea, muddy trainers and all, and just breathed.

The weather had been glorious driving down, that warm Dutch sunshine that makes everything look slightly golden. I'd planned my whole stay around walking, you see. The coastal paths near the Haringvliet, maybe pushing down towards the Grevelingenmeer, proper long days with a packed lunch and that satisfying ache in your legs come evening. I had maps printed out, which already tells you the kind of over-prepared holidaymaker I am.

That first evening, though, sitting on that terrace with my tea going cold, I watched the sky change. The wind picked up. Clouds rolled in from somewhere near Zeeland with theatrical speed. By morning the warm weather had done a runner, replaced by something distinctly grey and spitting. I stood at the window in my walking gear feeling faintly ridiculous, like a dog that's been promised a walk and shown a thunderstorm instead.

Here's where the gentle self-reflection comes in, I suppose. I'd built this whole trip in my head as a series of sunny coastal marches, me striding along like some seasoned explorer, probably wearing a hat I don't actually own. The reality was me, day one, pacing around a cottage in North Brabant waiting for weather that clearly wasn't arriving on schedule. I had to actually stop and ask myself why I was so wedded to the original plan, why a bit of rain felt like such a personal affront.

I ended up doing a shorter local walk that first day, just looping through the fields near the property, getting properly rained on, and returning to dry off with another cup of tea. It wasn't the coastal epic I'd imagined. But there was something quietly brilliant about it anyway, about being in that specific flat Brabant landscape with the weather doing whatever it pleased, my plans thoroughly softened around the edges. The Hoeven itself became the destination rather than just base camp, which I hadn't expected at all.

The warm weather did return, eventually, and I got my coastal walks in later in the week. But that first impression, soggy and slightly humbled, stayed with me longer than the sunshine did.
