About Limburg
I have to be upfront with you: I made a right mess of the sat nav on the way to our Meijel in Limburg. We'd been driving from the Eurotunnel for what felt like geological ages, and somewhere near Eindhoven I got cocky and thought, "I know a shortcut." Reader, I did not know a shortcut. We ended up down a farm track so narrow that a chicken looked at us with outright pity. My other half sat in silence, which is always worse than shouting. Forty-five minutes later, we rolled up to the holiday home with me doing that over-cheerful "well, we're here!" voice that fools absolutely nobody.

The Meijel itself, though, sorted my mood out sharpish. It's one of those proper Dutch holiday homes, all timber and big windows, and the moment I stepped onto the decking with a lukewarm coffee from our travel flask, I felt that particular holiday click of everything slowing down. The garden backs onto proper Limburg countryside, not the flat-as-a-pancake stuff people wrongly assume all of Holland is. Here you've got gentle hills, woods, those sandy paths that make every walk feel like a proper expedition even when you're barely five miles from the village.

We'd packed for walking, big time. Waterproofs, boots, the whole rambling catalogue order. The plan was coastal hikes, which sounds mad until you remember Limburg's got the Maasplassen, this massive network of lakes and waterways from old gravel pits. Not the sea, obviously, but there's something brilliantly Dutch about calling it a coast anyway. The first morning, we set off full of beans, me with a borrowed OS-style app that I'd not quite learned to use. We found the water within twenty minutes, which felt like a triumph, and spent a happy hour watching sailing boats bob about while I ate an embarrassing number of stroopwafels.

Then the weather did that thing it does in Limburg in late spring, where the morning promises everything and the afternoon delivers a muggy, thundery plot twist. We'd planned a proper long loop around the lakes, but by two o'clock the sky had gone that particular bruised purple that makes even optimistic walkers check their insurance. We sheltered under some birch trees and had one of those conversations about whether to press on or retreat. I was all for being stoic and British about it, naturally, but my other half pointed out that our "coastal" walk had already featured three mosquito attacks and a minor navigational disagreement involving a field of very curious sheep.

So we turned back, and here's the gentle reflection bit I promised: I'm genuinely glad we did. The Meijel had this covered terrace area, and we spent that afternoon reading actual books while the rain came down in that satisfying, drumming way it does on a timber roof. I made tea with the funny little hob and felt smug about our decision. The next morning, properly rested, we did a shorter dawn walk when everything was still misty and the "coast" looked properly atmospheric, all grey water and birds calling. It was better than the epic hike would have been, honestly.

We spent the rest of the week letting the weather dictate things, which is not my usual controlling approach to holidays. Morning walks when it was clear, lazy afternoons at the Meijel when it turned humid, evening strolls to the village for ice cream when it cooled. Limburg's good for that rhythm, I've decided. The Maasplassen "coast" doesn't demand you conquer it, just that you show up at the right moments.

On our last evening, I finally got that long walk, two hours looping through the woods as the light went golden. I didn't get lost once, which felt like personal growth. Back at the Meijel, sitting with my feet up and a local beer, I thought about how I'd arrived flustered and slightly humiliated by a chicken. I left feeling rather fond of my own capacity to get things wrong and still end up somewhere lovely.
