About Limburg
The mishap proper came as we turned onto what I was certain was the right lane, only to discover it was in fact a farm track belonging to someone who definitely did not appreciate a Vauxhall Astra crunching over his carefully raked gravel. A very patient man in overalls directed us back with hand gestures that needed no translation, and we arrived at the Meijel slightly pink-cheeked but mercifully intact. Stepping out of the car, the first thing that struck me was the quiet. Not the oppressive, watch-your-every-move quiet of a posh hotel, but the genuine, birds-doing-their-thing, distant-cowbells sort of quiet that makes you realise how much noise you normally carry around in your own head. The property sat there looking terribly pleased with itself, all traditional Dutch styling with that lovely pitched roof and proper character about it. I am a sucker for a decent roof, always have been. My wife finds this baffling. The children had already bolted for the garden before I could issue my standard lecture about not touching anything until we'd done a proper recce. They discovered the outdoor furniture and immediately declared it "theirs," which in child logic means territorial rights lasting the duration of the stay. Fair enough. I was more taken with the barbecue area, standing there with optimistic readiness, practically begging for sausages and poor decisions about charcoal timing. Inside, the place had that immediately comfortable feel you cannot manufacture. Wooden beams, proper flooring underfoot, none of that laminate pretending to be something it isn't. The kitchen looked like somewhere you might actually cook in rather than just microwave ready meals, though I will confess our ambitions rarely match our execution on holiday. There is always that first evening where you open every cupboard with the enthusiasm of someone who will definitely make proper use of the slow cooker, knowing full well you'll end up with cheese on toast by Wednesday. The living area drew us in with its straightforward appeal - decent seating, space to sprawl, none of that minimalist nonsense where you're afraid to actually sit down. My daughter immediately claimed a corner for her book, my son began investigating what he termed "the nooks," and my wife and I shared one of those glances that said, without words, that perhaps the farm track incident was already forgiven. What I had not expected was how quickly the place would slow us down. We are not a family known for our stillness. Yet there we were, within an hour of arrival, simply sitting in the garden with cups of tea that had gone slightly cold because nobody could be bothered to move. The surrounding landscape of southern Limburg rolled away in that gentle, unhurried fashion the Dutch seem to have perfected, all proper countryside without being dramatic about it. I found myself thinking, with the mild embarrassment of someone not accustomed to introspection, that perhaps I had been running a bit fast lately. Nothing profound, no life-changing revelation. Just the quiet observation that sitting still felt rather good, and that I had perhaps forgotten this simple fact somewhere between work deadlines and the general chaos of keeping small humans operational. The kids reappeared demanding exploration, and the moment passed as such moments do. But it stayed with me, that first impression of a place that asked nothing of us except to be present in it. No grand architecture, no stunning views that knock you sideways, just honest comfort and the space to remember how to do very little at all. We would walk the local paths tomorrow, investigate whatever small villages sat within easy reach, probably fail at fishing if there was water nearby, and definitely make a hash of that barbecue. But for now, arrival accomplished, mishap survived, we simply were. And honestly, after the year we'd had, that felt like rather enough. |
