I should have known the sat nav was up to no good when it tried to send me through what looked like someone's back garden just outside Leer. Three hours from Amsterdam, two wrong turns, and one spectacular argument with a Dutch roundabout later, I finally spotted the sign for Wagenborgen. My hire car, a Fiat 500 that had started the journey feeling jaunty and now felt like a tin can full of regret, rattled over the final stretch of road.

The mishap came thirty seconds from salvation. I spotted the holiday home, a proper charming detached house with that textbook Dutch gable, and in my excitement I completely missed the narrow drainage ditch running alongside the gravel drive. Front wheel in. Splendid. There I was, arse in the air, trying to rock the Fiat out while a local cyclist slowed down to watch with the kind of polite concern the Dutch have perfected. He didn't laugh. I appreciated that. I think he felt sorry for me.

The owner, a friendly chap named Henk, appeared from next door with a rope and a tractor. Ten minutes later I was properly arrived, though my dignity remained somewhere in that ditch. He showed me round the place with admirable restraint, never once mentioning the muddy state of my shoes or the faint whiff of panic still clinging to me.

The house itself immediately made up for the journey. It is one of those solid, unpretious Dutch properties that knows exactly what it is. Big windows facing south, filling the living room with light that makes everything feel honest and clean. The kitchen had that particular smell of a place that actually gets used for cooking, not just for posing on Instagram. I ran my hand along the wooden table and could tell it had hosted decades of proper breakfasts. Henk pointed out the little terrace round the back, modest but private, with a view across flat farmland that stretches to the horizon like a green promise.

I dumped my bags in the bedroom upstairs, which was simple and spotless, with a window that frames nothing but sky and the occasional steeple from the village proper. The bedding smelled of outside, that particular fresh air scent you only get in places where the wind has room to move. I stood there for a moment, still slightly vibrating from the drive, and felt something in my shoulders drop. The kind of release that only happens when you finally stop.

Wagenborgen itself is tiny. A proper village, not a tourist confection. I walked to the local shop for milk and bread, passing houses with immaculate gardens and bicycles leaning against every wall. The woman in the shop spoke enough English to tease me about my car situation, so word clearly travels. I bought stroopwafels out of sheer embarrassment and ate two before I got back to the house.

That first evening I sat on the terrace with a beer from the supermarket in Delfzijl, watching the light change over the fields. The quiet here is different from home. It is not empty, just unhurried. Somewhere a dog barked. A tractor droned in the distance. I thought about the ditch, the sat nav, my stubborn refusal to admit I was lost for a solid twenty minutes. Sometimes the best arrivals involve a bit of struggle, I decided. Makes the sitting still feel earned.

I finished my beer and went inside, leaving the terrace door open to the cool evening. The house felt welcoming in that particular way old buildings do, as if it had been waiting for someone to simply turn up and exhale.
