I should have known the holiday was going to be eventful when I got my first proper look at the map and realised I'd been confidently pronouncing "Vlagtwedde" completely wrong for the entire three-hour drive from the ferry. Something between "Vlag-twed" and a cough, apparently. My partner found this absolutely hilarious and spent the rest of the journey practising it loudly every time we passed a cyclist, which in Groningen is roughly every eleven seconds.

The mishap came right at the end, naturally. We'd been warned the property was down a narrow lane, but "narrow" turned out to mean "agricultural track designed for one determined sheep." I reversed our hire car into what I insisted was a "generous passing place" and what turned out to be a drainage ditch. The gentle crunch of plastic trim against Dutch engineering was not the arrival fanfare I'd imagined. Two very amused farmers eventually towed us out with a tractor that looked older than my dad, and we finally rolled up to the holiday home with our dignity in tatters and mud absolutely everywhere.

But here's the thing about first impressions: they can turn on a sixpence. The moment we stepped through the door, the whole sorry journey melted away. The place had that wonderful stillness you only get in proper countryside, the kind where you can actually hear yourself think for the first time in months. Big windows looked out over flat green fields stretching to a hazy horizon, and somewhere in the distance a church bell was doing its unhurried thing. I stood there with my muddy shoes in my hand, suddenly very aware that I'd been rushing through life at entirely the wrong speed.

We'd arrived in late May with ambitious plans for coastal walks along the Wadden Sea, that extraordinary stretch of tidal flats and salt marsh that makes this corner of the Netherlands so special. The weather, however, had other ideas. The first morning dawned bright and almost aggressively cheerful, so we set off full of purpose for a long hike toward the Lauwersmeer. Within forty minutes the sky had turned theatrical, and we were sheltering under a birdwatching hide while rain came down like it was personally offended. My waterproof jacket proved itself about as waterproof as a tea towel.

The rest of the week became a running negotiation with the elements. We'd wake to glorious sunshine, stride out confidently, then find ourselves sprinting back as clouds gathered with almost comic speed. One afternoon we actually made it five miles along the dyke before a sudden warmth sent us scrambling for suncream we'd foolishly left behind. The weather here doesn't just change; it performs, complete with plot twists.

I started to love this unpredictability, though. It forced a kind of present-moment attention I don't normally manage. You couldn't stride out with your headphones in and your mind elsewhere; you had to actually notice the light, the wind direction, the particular quality of the air. The walks we did complete - along the Oldambtmeer, through the Borgerswold forest - felt earned rather than merely ticked off.

By the end, I'd stopped checking forecasts entirely. Some things you simply can't plan, whether it's the pronunciation of a village name, the location of a drainage ditch, or whether your coastal hike will end in glorious sunshine or a philosophical conversation in a bird hide. The best adventures, I'm slowly learning, contain at least one small disaster and a decent amount of mud.
