About Groningen
The real comedy came during the final mile. I had been warned about the narrow lanes, but nothing quite prepares you for the reality of Dutch farm tracks when you're piloting a car still loaded with enough luggage for a fortnight. I slowed to a crawl behind a tractor that showed absolutely no intention of letting me pass, which gave me plenty of time to admire the flat, green landscape rolling out in every direction. Then, in a moment of pure genius, I decided to check my phone for the exact property details while still rolling along. The result? A gentle but unmistakable crunch as my front wheel found the only ditch within fifty metres. Not stuck, exactly. Just... dramatically tilted, with the passenger side leaning into grass considerably taller than my knee. A farmer appeared from nowhere, which I suspect is a talent they teach in Dutch agricultural school. He said nothing, merely raised one eyebrow, attached a rope to my tow hook, and pulled me free with his tractor in roughly twelve seconds. I offered him my finest embarrassed English thank you. He nodded, pocketed the rope, and drove off without a word. I sat there for a moment, engine running, wondering if that had actually happened. The holiday home itself materialised through a line of trees just as I was convincing myself the whole trip had been a terrible mistake. It was one of those traditional Vlagtwedde properties, long and low with a proper thatched roof that looked almost too picture-perfect to be real. I half expected a postcard photographer to leap from the bushes. Instead, I got silence. Proper, heavy, countryside silence, broken only by something that was probably a pheasant having a minor panic in the undergrowth. Stepping out of the car, my first sensation was the smell. Not the manure-and-diesel cocktail I had braced for, but something greener and cleaner, like cut grass and damp earth and that particular freshness you only find somewhere with more sky than buildings. My second sensation was the realisation that I had packed entirely the wrong shoes. The gravel crunched satisfyingly under my trainers as I approached the front door, already plotting how to make the farmer's eyebrow-raise into a dinner party anecdote. The key was exactly where the instructions promised, tucked in a little metal box that required the kind of fumbling you can only do with cold hands and mounting paranoia about dropping it into a flowerbed. The door opened with a satisfying weight to it, none of your flimsy modern nonsense, and I stepped into a hallway that smelled of wood polish and something faintly vanilla. The floorboards announced my arrival with a proper creak, the kind that makes a house feel lived-in rather than merely maintained. I dumped my bags without ceremony and walked straight through to the back, drawn by light flooding through windows I had not expected to be quite so large. The garden stretched away from me, neat but not fussy, ending at a hedge that marked the boundary with farmland beyond. A wooden table sat waiting with what I can only describe as theatrical patience, as if it had been positioned specifically for someone to sit with a cup of tea and contemplate their life choices. I pulled out a chair and did exactly that, still wearing my coat, still faintly muddy from the ditch. The thing about arriving somewhere after a long drive and a small humiliation is that your expectations get recalibrated without permission. I had wanted charming, and I had prepared myself to be disappointed by charming. What I found instead was something quieter and more honest: a place that knew exactly what it was, and saw no reason to apologise for the tractors, the ditches, or the eyebrow-raising locals. I sat there until the light started to fade and the temperature suggested strongly that I should move indoors, and I felt something in my shoulders release that I had not realised I was holding. Tomorrow I would explore properly, find the local shop, perhaps work out where one buys groceries in a village that seemed to consist mainly of fields and determination. Tonight, I would make tea with the supplies I had brought, eat something from a packet without shame, and sleep in a bedroom with beams that looked older than my entire street back home. The sat nav had tried to kill me, the farmer had silently judged me, and my car now listed slightly to the left. But I was here, in a thatched house in Groningen, and the silence had already started to feel like something I could get used to. |
