About Groningen
I should have known the sat nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through a field outside Veendam. Three and a half hours from the ferry at Hook of Holland, my partner dozing in the passenger seat, and there I was arguing with a disembodied voice about whether a dirt track counted as a road. Spoiler: it did not. We reversed for what felt like miles, me offering increasingly insincere apologies while she muttered about trusting paper maps. The mishap that truly defined our arrival, though, came ten minutes later when I confidently strode into what I believed was our holiday cottage, only to find a very surprised Dutchman eating his breakfast in his own kitchen. Wrong house. Same lane. Nearly identical front door. I backed out with the sort of theatrical bow usually reserved for pantomime villains, and the poor chap didn't even put down his toast.

By the time we actually found the right place - a tidy, modern bungalow tucked along a quiet lane near Vlagtwedde - I was ready to collapse into the nearest chair and never move again. The key box code worked first time, which felt like a minor miracle after my navigational performance. Stepping inside, the first thing that hit me was the warmth. Not just the heating, though that was welcome after the April chill outside, but the immediate sense that someone had thought about what tired travellers actually need. A proper kettle. Decent mugs. A sofa you could genuinely sink into without fear of never escaping.

I made straight for the kitchen, because nothing says "I've arrived" like a cup of tea made with your own supplies while you figure out where everything lives. The space was bright and uncluttered, with one of those big sliding doors looking out onto a modest garden and, beyond it, flat fields stretching to a horizon that seemed impossibly far away. Coming from Yorkshire, I thought I knew open countryside. Groningen taught me otherwise. There is something almost unsettling about land that flat, that exposed. I stood there with my tea going cold, realising how much of my life I've spent surrounded by hills, by things that block your view and give you the illusion of enclosure. Here, the sky dominates everything. It presses down and lifts you up simultaneously, and I couldn't decide if I found it liberating or slightly exposing. Probably both. That's the self-reflection bit I wasn't expecting from a Tuesday afternoon cuppa.

My partner, ever practical, had already investigated the bedrooms and pronounced them "actually proper comfortable," which is high praise indeed. The twin room looked ideal for our youngest, who was staying with grandparents this trip, and the main bedroom had that rare quality of feeling immediately settled-in rather than sterile. I poked my head into the bathroom, noted the shower looked powerful enough to actually wake me up in mornings, and felt a small surge of relief. Holiday rentals can be such a lottery.

By evening, we'd established our pattern without even discussing it. She unpacked with methodical precision while I wandered between rooms, touching surfaces, opening cupboards, generally being nosy. The WiFi password was handwritten on a card by the telly. The heating controls required a small degree in engineering, which we gave up on and simply adjusted jumpers instead. Someone had left a folder of local information - walking routes, a takeaway menu from a place in Bourtange about ten minutes away, instructions for the washing machine written in that excellent Dutch English that manages to be clearer than most native speakers achieve.

We didn't venture out again that first night. A simple pasta, a bottle of wine we'd brought from home, and those sliding doors open just enough to let in the extraordinary silence of the place. No traffic hum. No distant motorway. Just occasional birdsong and the faint creak of the garden furniture settling. I found myself speaking in a half-whisper without meaning to, as if loudness would somehow break the spell.

I fell asleep embarrassingly early, still in my clothes, still on that excellent sofa. My partner took a photo for posterity, which she has since threatened to use for blackmail purposes. I cannot bring myself to care. That first evening in Vlagtwedde, lost sat nav and wrong-house intrusion and all, had already settled into something I'll remember far longer than the more dramatic moments of the trip. Sometimes the best travel stories aren't the ones you plan.
