I should have known the sat nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through what looked like someone's back garden in the middle of Lauwersmeer National Park. Three hours from the Eurotunnel, two coffees, one argument about whether I'd packed the charging cables, and there I was, crawling along a narrow dyke road in Groningen with reeds taller than the car windows on either side, convinced I'd somehow driven into a nature documentary.

The mishap came five minutes later. I'd stopped to let a cyclist pass - very Dutch, very polite - and in my eagerness to be courteous, I managed to wedge the front wheel firmly into a drainage ditch. Not dramatically. Just... embarrassingly. The sort of stuck that required me to get out, assess the situation with hands on hips, and pretend this was completely normal holiday behaviour. A passing farmer in a flat-cap didn't even slow down. Just nodded, as if tourists ditched their cars here daily. I chose to believe this was Dutch stoicism rather than commentary on my driving.

Extracting myself took ten minutes of careful reversing and some creative language my grandmother wouldn't have approved of. By the time I actually reached the property, I was half an hour late, slightly sweaty, and in desperate need of the toilet.

The cottage sat at the end of a proper gravel track, right on the edge of the water. Lauwerzijl, I later learned, is one of those tiny settlements that doesn't so much have a centre as a general feeling of being somewhere. The house itself was low and brick, with that particular Dutch practicality about it - nothing fancy, nothing pretending to be anything it wasn't. White window frames, a small porch, and a clothesline already strung between two posts despite the fact it had been spitting rain all morning.

I fumbled with the key box, dropped the code sheet in a puddle, and finally stumbled through the door with my bags and my dignity in roughly equal states of disarray.

The smell hit first. That particular clean, slightly woody scent of a place that's been properly aired. The kitchen was immediately to my left, compact but not cramped, with a view straight out across the water. I put the kettle on before I'd even taken my coat off, which tells you everything about my priorities. The floorboards creaked in a friendly, non-alarming way as I moved through to the living area. Low ceilings - I'm six foot and immediately developed a respectful stoop - and furniture that looked like it had actually been chosen for comfort rather than Instagram.

I stood at the window with my tea, watching a heron stand completely motionless in the reeds. My car sat visible in the small parking area, no longer ditched, no longer embarrassing. Just a car on a holiday. The rain had stopped without me noticing. Somewhere nearby, a boat engine coughed into life.

I thought about the journey, the sat nav's betrayal, the ditch, the farmer's indifferent nod. None of it mattered now. That's the thing about first impressions of a place - they arrive tangled up with whatever chaos you brought with you. The cottage didn't care about my morning. It just sat there, solid and patient, waiting for me to catch up.

I finished my tea and started properly looking around.
