About Gelderland
The property sat down a quiet lane, the sort where you immediately lower your voice without quite knowing why. A converted barn, or at least that was the promise, though from the outside it looked more like a very sensible Dutch person had taken a traditional structure and politely asked it to behave itself. Clean lines, big windows, none of that twee nonsense you sometimes get with holiday lets. I liked it instantly, which was fortunate because I was still extracting twigs from my sleeve. The key was in the lockbox, which sounds simple enough except I had somehow convinced myself the code was my mother's birthday backwards. It was not. After several increasingly desperate attempts, my partner gently reminded me that I had, in fact, written the actual code in my phone notes under "Voorthuizen - IMPORTANT." There it was. 2741. I had spent five minutes trying 1947. The hedge incident suddenly felt less like an anomaly and more like a theme. Stepping inside, the first thing that hit me was the smell. Not the chemical lemon of too many rental properties, but something warmer. Wood, maybe, or the ghost of whatever this barn once held. The living space opened up in that satisfying way old conversions do, beams overhead that you instinctively duck under even when you don't need to. I did need to, as it turned out. Once. The kitchen ran along one wall, properly equipped in that understated Dutch manner where everything has its place and its place makes perfect sense. I opened a cupboard looking for a mug and found the mugs, the glasses, and a tea towel folded with military precision. My own kitchen at home looks like a jumble sale after an earthquake. I felt briefly judged by a tea towel. The bedroom was up a narrow staircase, the kind that demands you reconsider any luggage heavier than a modest rucksack. Ours was not modest. I hauled my case up with the determination of someone pretending this was exactly the exercise they needed after six hours sat in a Vauxhall. The reward was worth it - a proper bed under those same old beams, windows that actually opened without a struggle, and a view across flat green fields that seemed to stretch on with the quiet confidence of land that has been farmland for centuries and sees no reason to change now. I stood there for a moment, slightly out of breath, still wearing my coat because I had forgotten to take it off. That was when the gentle self-reflection crept in. I am not a relaxed traveller. I am a planner, a checker, someone who arrives at destinations already halfway to the next worry. But there was something about this place - the stillness of it, the way the afternoon light came through those big windows without any drama - that made my shoulders drop a fraction. I was still standing in a coat I didn't need, still recovering from a hedge assault, still unable to remember a four-digit code without technological assistance. But I was here. And for the first time that day, that felt like enough. My partner appeared with two cups of tea, made with the militarily precise tea towel still folded on the counter. We sat on the small terrace outside, watching the light change over those confident fields, not saying much. The cat from earlier wandered past, still looking professionally unimpressed. I didn't care. The satnav had failed me, the hedge had defeated me, and my own memory had betrayed me. But Voorthuizen had welcomed me anyway, in its quiet, sensible, thoroughly Dutch way. I had a feeling I was going to like it here. |
