About Gelderland
I have never been so relieved to see a windmill in my life. There we were, three hours into what should have been a ninety-minute drive from Eindhoven, and my phone had just announced in that smug way it does that we had arrived at our destination. The only problem was that our destination appeared to be a field of very unimpressed cows. No cottage. No welcoming lights. Just bovine judgment and the sinking realisation that I had typed "Neede" into the sat nav but somehow selected a farm track with a similar-sounding name.

My wife gave me that look. You know the one. The one that says "I love you but I am absolutely going to bring this up at Christmas dinner for the next fifteen years."

Turns out the actual cottage was another ten minutes away, tucked down a proper lane with actual tarmac and everything. The HGE063, as the booking confirmation rather clinically called it, sat there like a proper storybook affair: dark wooden beams, that satisfyingly chunky thatched roof, and a front garden that looked like someone had spent actual time making it look effortlessly charming. I half expected a hobbit to pop out and offer us second breakfast.

The key was in the lockbox exactly where promised, which felt like a small miracle given my navigation skills that evening. Stepping inside was like walking into somebody's very sensible grandmother's house, if that grandmother happened to have excellent taste in comfortable sofas and absolutely nailed the art of making a place feel lived-in without being cluttered. The wood burner dominated the living room, all black iron and promises of cosiness. My daughter immediately claimed the window seat, announcing she would be "doing her reading there every morning," which lasted exactly one morning before she discovered the garden trampoline.

The kitchen smelled faintly of coffee and cleaning products, that particular holiday-rental aroma that somehow signals "relax, we've thought of the basics." And they had. Proper mugs, not those tiny espresso thimbles. A kettle that actually boiled at reasonable speed. A fridge big enough for the alarming quantity of cheese we had already purchased at a farm shop somewhere near the wrong turn.

I must confess something here. I am normally that person who arrives somewhere and immediately needs to unpack, organise, establish systems. It's exhausting being me on holiday. But something about this place, with its low ceilings and creaky floorboards and the way the evening light came through the kitchen window, made me want to do absolutely nothing except stand there with a cup of tea and watch my family discover the place.

My son found the upstairs bedrooms first, shouting down that one had "a bed with a roof" - the sloped ceiling of the master, I later discovered, which did indeed make you feel nicely tucked in. The bathroom was spotless, all white tiles and a shower with actual pressure, which is rarer in holiday lets than you might imagine.

We did venture out that first evening, just a wander down to the edge of the village. Neede itself is one of those places that doesn't shout for attention. A church tower visible above the trees. The occasional cyclist passing with that Dutch confidence on two wheels that I will never possess. We found a pub that served bitterballen, which my children examined with the suspicion they reserve for all new foods, then devoured with embarrassing speed.

Back at the cottage, we lit the wood burner despite it not really being cold enough to justify it. There is something about a real fire that makes a holiday feel properly legitimate, even if you're mostly just feeding it bits of the free firewood and feeling vaguely medieval. We sat with our books and our snacks and the particular quiet that comes from being somewhere with no agenda.

I kept thinking about that wrong turn. How stressed I had been, how convinced I was that I had ruined the first evening, how my wife's look had momentarily withered my soul. And yet here we were, in this warm, slightly creaky, impossibly Dutch cottage, and none of it mattered even slightly. That's the thing about a proper family break, I think. The mishaps become the stories before they've even finished happening. The wrong turn leads to the relief of arrival, and the relief of arrival leads to the particular pleasure of settling in somewhere that feels, almost immediately, like it might let you pretend you live there.

Tomorrow we might find the local swimming pool, or hire bikes, or simply tramp about in the surrounding countryside that the brochure promises is "typically Gelderland" - which I have decided means flat, green, and excellent for not getting lost in. Tonight, though, we are here, and the fire is crackling, and my daughter has fallen asleep on the window seat with her book still open, and I am already wondering if we could come back next year.

Assuming I can find it, of course.
