About Friesland
I had been driving for what felt like three days when I finally realised my sat nav had developed a stubborn personality of its own. Somewhere around Leeuwarden it decided I absolutely must see a particular roundabout seventeen times, which I suppose was generous of it, but not terribly helpful. By the time I crawled into Tzummarum, a tiny village in Friesland that my phone kept autocorrecting to "Tzar Marmalade," I was ready to kiss the tarmac.

The mishap came seconds after I stepped out of the car. I had packed with the precision of someone who owns far too many shoes, which is to say none at all. My wheeled suitcase, bloated and overconfident, took one look at the charming cobblestones leading to the property and promptly ejected a wheel. It clattered into a flowerbed with the theatrical flair of a Shakespearean death scene. A local cyclist paused to watch. I gave him a cheerful wave that I hoped conveyed "I am a competent adult" rather than "please send help." He cycled on, wisely unconvinced.

The property itself is one of those traditional Frisian houses, all red brick and steep gables, with windows that seem to peer at you like a curious grandparent. I later learned it sits near the edge of the village, close enough to the church that you hear the bells but far enough that you do not feel personally judged by them. The garden was already doing that Dutch thing of being impossibly tidy without appearing to try. My wheel-less suitcase and I wheezed our way up the path, and I fumbled with the key box code that I had written on my hand and then partially washed off in a service station panic.

Stepping inside was like walking into someone's very sensible dream. The wooden beams overhead were thick and dark, the sort that make you duck automatically even when you do not need to. The kitchen smelled faintly of coffee and cleaning products, that particular combination that says "holiday" in a way nothing else quite manages. I opened the fridge to find it empty but humming efficiently, and I felt an odd affection for it immediately. We had both travelled far to be here, after all.

I dumped my belongings in the nearest bedroom without ceremony and immediately tested the bed with the gravity of a falling tree. It bounced. I lay there staring at a ceiling sloped at an angle that suggested the house had settled into its opinions long ago. Through the window I could see flat green fields stretching toward a horizon that seemed almost aggressively distant. Friesland does not do hills. It does sky, and water, and the occasional sheep looking disappointed in you.

The bathroom revealed a shower with pressure that could strip paint, which I noted with the satisfaction of someone who has suffered too many drizzly English hotel experiences. I stood under it later and let it pummel the motorway out of my shoulders, thinking about how I had arrived with a broken suitcase, a half-washed hand, and absolutely no plan for dinner.

That first evening I walked to the village shop, which was small and patient and sold cheese that I could not pronounce. I bought bread, some ham, and a beer I selected purely for the colour of its label. Back at the house I sat in the garden as the light stretched long and golden across those flat fields, eating my makeshift meal and listening to the distant sound of someone practicing the piano. It was not perfect. My suitcase was still wounded in the hallway. I had no idea where the nearest proper supermarket might be. But there was something in the quiet, in the particular quality of northern Dutch evening air, that made me exhale properly for the first time in months.

I had come to Friesland slightly broken, slightly lost, and with one wheel fewer than I started with. Perhaps that was exactly the right way to arrive.
