About Friesland
I should have known the sat nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through someone's front garden in Heerenveen. There I was, beetling along in my slightly-too-small hire car, convinced I was minutes from Oosterwolde, when a cheerful Dutch voice announced I had reached my destination. I had, in fact, reached a field of very unimpressed-looking sheep. The farmer, leaning on his gate, found this absolutely hilarious. I found it less so, having just reversed fifty metres up a narrow lane while he offered directions through increasingly uncontrollable laughter.

Forty minutes later, properly arrived and considerably humbled, I pulled up to the sort of place that makes you immediately forgive all navigational sins. The house sat there in late afternoon sunshine, all tidy brick and sensible Dutch proportions, with a garden that seemed to stretch on forever. I stood on the gravel drive for a good minute, just breathing it in. Somewhere in the distance, a horse made a noise that sounded remarkably like my uncle clearing his throat before a speech.

The key was exactly where the instructions said it would be, which felt like a small miracle after my earlier performance. I pushed open the door and was hit by that particular stillness of a house that's been waiting patiently for someone to arrive. The living room was flooded with golden light, and I did what any sensible person would do: dumped my bags unceremoniously in the hall and made straight for the garden with a cup of tea that I absolutely did not need given the time, but absolutely deserved given the circumstances.

That first evening set the tone for everything that followed. I discovered the garden had a bench positioned with almost suspicious precision to catch the last of the sun. I sat there until the light went properly pink, watching nothing much happen with the kind of attention I usually reserve for important meetings. A blackbird landed on the lawn, looked at me with what I can only describe as professional curiosity, then went about his business. I felt this was an excellent arrangement.

The next morning, I walked to the village centre, which took all of twelve minutes at my most leisurely pace. Oosterwolde is not a place that rewards rushing. I bought bread from a bakery where the woman seemed genuinely pleased to see me, which I found both touching and slightly worrying about my usual social interactions. Back at the house, I spent approximately three hours reading the same three pages of a novel, repeatedly distracted by the quality of the silence and the particular way the light moved across the kitchen table.

I did venture to the nearby De Rietvoorn recreation area one afternoon, mostly because I felt I should do something that might conceivably count as an activity. I hired a bicycle, pootled along a flat path beside water that was improbably still, and stopped whenever something caught my eye. This happened approximately every four minutes. I saw a heron standing in what I can only describe as a mood, and a family of ducks whose organisational skills put my own to shame. By the time I returned the bike, I had achieved nothing measurable whatsoever and felt utterly triumphant.

The days developed their own rhythm. Morning coffee in the garden, watching the mist lift off the grass. Afternoon reading sessions that merged seamlessly into evening reading sessions. Occasional walks to the local shops for provisions I didn't strictly need but enjoyed purchasing enormously. I became embarrassingly invested in the progress of tomatoes in a neighbouring allotment, waving at their owner as if we were old friends.

On my final morning, I sat on that same garden bench with my third cup of tea and watched the sun do its slow climb. I thought about how I'd arrived in a state of mild panic, convinced that relaxation required proper management, and was leaving with what felt like a genuine understanding of doing very little with complete commitment. The blackbird reappeared, possibly the same one, possibly not. We acknowledged each other with the easy familiarity of people who have spent quality time together without the burden of conversation.

I drove away eventually, the sat nav behaving itself for once, already planning when I might return to this particular corner of Friesland where the most demanding thing asked of you is simply to be present for the sunshine.
