About Friesland
Turns out the proper road to Balk was about two hundred metres back, clearly signposted, and entirely sat-nav-free. We found it eventually, rattling down a narrow lane flanked by those impossibly neat Friesian hedgerows, the ones that look like someone trims them with a spirit level and a deep sense of personal responsibility. The mishap had cost us twenty minutes and most of my dignity, but the compensation was immediate: proper countryside silence, broken only by a distant cow and my son asking why Dutch sheep looked "more organised" than English ones. Balk itself appeared like a postcard someone had left in the sun too long, all soft colours and water everywhere. The village sits on the edge of the Slotermeer, and even arriving slightly frazzled, you can't miss how water dominates everything here. Canals, ditches, the lake glinting beyond the houses - it's as if the whole place is having a permanent conversation with the elements, and mostly winning. Our holiday home sat on a quiet residential street, the sort where bicycles outnumber cars by a ratio that would make a London cyclist weep with envy. The property was one of those solid, unpretentious Dutch houses that know exactly what they're about: white-rendered walls, a proper garden with actual grass the children could ruin, and windows that seemed designed to let in every available scrap of that pale northern light. No fuss, no pretension, just the confident architecture of a place that understands its purpose. Stepping inside felt like the holiday actually beginning. The living area had that lived-in warmth you can't manufacture, with wooden floors that creaked pleasantly underfoot and furniture arranged for actual human conversation rather than Instagram aesthetics. My daughter immediately claimed the window seat for surveillance purposes - "in case any Dutch cats walk past" - while my son discovered the garden and began an urgent inventory of potential football locations. The kitchen, compact but sensibly arranged, had clearly been designed by someone who cooks on holiday rather than just reheating. I found myself already imagining morning coffee with the doors open to that garden, evening beers while the children finally exhausted themselves after days on the water. That's the peculiar magic of a proper cottage-style break, isn't it? The fantasy starts immediately, before you've even unpacked, and somehow the reality usually manages to live up to it. I stood in that garden later, still slightly damp from an impromptu water fight the children had initiated with the outdoor tap, and watched the sky do that slow, luminous fade that northern evenings specialise in. The sat-nav disaster already felt like another trip entirely, a comedy anecdote rather than a frustration. That's what these places do, I think. They slow everything down until your priorities reassert themselves. Good light, decent space, water nearby, and the gentle rhythm of a village that isn't trying to be anything except what it is. My wife brought out two cups of tea. We didn't say much. The children were plotting something involving tomorrow and a canoe hire we'd spotted in the village. The sheep, thankfully, were nowhere to be seen. |
