I should have known the satnav was up to no good when it tried to send me through a field outside Almere. We arrived at the holiday park twenty minutes later than planned, slightly rattled, and with me making solemn promises to trust technology henceforth.

Lelystad revealed itself slowly, which I rather liked. No grand arrival, no dramatic reveal. Just neat roads, that particular Dutch flatness that makes the sky feel enormous, and suddenly there we were at the edge of the Oostvaardersplassen. The property sat in a quiet corner of the park, and I will admit my first thought was entirely superficial: that is a very tidy little house. Scandinavian-looking wood, clean lines, the sort of place that makes you immediately conscious of your muddy shoes. I wiped them twice on the mat. Old habits from visiting Dutch friends who somehow maintain spotless hallways despite living in a country where it rains with casual persistence.

The key collection was straightforward, almost disappointingly so. I had braced for some complicated lockbox scenario involving codes sent to email addresses I never check. Instead, a friendly handover, a few pointers about the area, and we were in. The first thing that struck me was the light. Flevoland is built on reclaimed land, which sounds industrial until you experience how the openness changes everything. No hills, no sudden shadows, just this generous, even brightness flooding through the windows. I stood in the kitchen for a moment, feeling pleasantly disoriented, like I had stepped into a photograph where everything was slightly too well-composed.

Then came the mishap. I had grand plans for a quick cycle to get our bearings, having spotted the hire bikes by reception. Within fifty metres, I realised I had not adjusted the seat, then that I had forgotten how Dutch bikes work generally, then that I was wobbling toward a very calm, very judgmental goose by the water's edge. I dismounted with what I can only describe as chaotic dignity, saved from actual collision by the goose's evident lack of concern. It watched me. That evening, we walked the short distance to the waterfront near Batavia Stad, not to shop, just to stretch our legs and watch the light change over the IJsselmeer. The air smelled of water and something green and growing, that marshy freshness you get in new landscapes still figuring themselves out. Flevoland is like that, I think, still young as Dutch places go, no centuries of accumulated story, just this boldness of having been made from nothing. It does not try to charm you with cobbles and crooked houses. It offers space instead, and sky, and the odd superior waterfowl.

I sat on the small terrace back at the property with a beer, watching the last of the daylight, still faintly embarrassed about the bike, already laughing about it. The satnav sat innocent in the car. The goose had won, obviously, but I was not keeping score. Not really.
